“One of the best meals I've ever had!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We had a fantastic one night stay at the Rose and Crown and can barely fault it. The staff were charming - especially the young girl on reception who was delightful and bent over backwards to help. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in the lounge (with yummy cake!) and then returned to our room to chill out. The heating wasn't working properly which was the only issue we had but the electric heater in the room kept it perfectly warm until the boiler was fixed!

We went for dinner which was truly one of the best meals I have eaten - my favourite chicken liver parfait for starter, venison cooked beautifully for main course and a delicious chocolate pot to end with. Fantastic wine to wash it down!

We then sat by the roaring fire in the bar to have a night cap before returning to our room where the heating had been fixed!

Even breakfast the next morning was really delicious and the village itself is beautiful.

I'd highly recommend this hotel for a lovely country break - just get away from it all and be pampered. The service was 2nd to none and I cannot fault it.

“Our favorite country retreat in a beautiful village”

We have had a winter weekend break to this delightful country hotel every year for the last four years. It is, without doubt, our favourite hotel-warm and welcoming with a cosy rustic bar and roaring fire in winter, several good real ales and excellent wine selection. There are a number of courtyard rooms which we tend to use because it is easier with our dog (dogs welcome in bar and bedrooms). The staff are always cheerful and friendly but very attentive. The real treat however is the fabulous cuisine, whether in the bar, bistro or cosy wood-panelled restaurant. The area of Teesdale is gorgeous with the waterfalls of Low Force and High Force within easy striking distance, excellent walking and the country town of Barnard Castle a short drive away.
The only problem I have in giving this review is the worry that The Rose and Crown will become too popular!

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms good for pets

“This rose to the challenge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

This really is a special treat place. Situated in the most beautiful wee village this is a quality must try venue. Superb snug bar. Restaurant with quality food served both at dinner and breakfast with quality attentive service. Wine list has excellent choice which suits all. Rooms small but well equipped. Perfect for walkers but transport required to get there.

“It should be kept a secret, but ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

everyone should know that this gem of a boutique hotel, with fabulous food exists just miles off the A66.

Our stay was our second visit to the Rose and Crown and we were not disappointed again. The hotel room was just dreamy, dinner and breakfast were everything we wanted, and the staff were lovely.

We're going back, just don't tell anyone please ....

Room Tip: Don't choose Room 11 - it's ours !

“Another excellent New Year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We have stayed at the Rose & Crown for the last three New Year's in a row (three or four nights each time) and we had another excellent visit this year as always. Dinner is invariably a treat here, especially on New Year's Eve, staff are particularly friendly and helpful, and the courtyard rooms enable us to bring our golden retriever, who enjoys the many walks from the hotel as much as we do. Many thanks for your hospitality once again and we look forward to seeing you next year.
