The Ranvas is an absolutely stunning hotel situated at the heart of an ancient fort. The site itself is enormous. Took about five minutes to drivevthrough the outer fort before reaching the hotel entrance.
The hotel itself has tasteful and modern decoration but is sympathetic to the original style and design of the fort. The rooms are located within 10 individual haveli, centrally located within the fort, with perhaps two or three rooms per haveli. On entering our haveli there was a beautiful hanging wooden swing and two loungers before we reached our room. Very beautiful and peaceful.
The room itself was really fabulous. Beautifully done out and with all mod cons. Private courtyard at the front and back of the room. Very light and airy, open plan design.
The fort has been superbly restored for the purposes of the hotel but the unused fort buildings surround the hotel and can be visited in your own private tour.
We were surprised to discover when we arrived that we were the only guests! This was a little unnerving as we are two women (mother and daughter) and all the hotel staff we saw were men (and there were a lot of them!). In such a secluded location we didn't really relax.
Nevertheless, the staff were hugely friendly, welcoming and helpful. In the evening the outdoor lounge and eating area and our haveli were covered with tea lights and the place looked stunning! A magical experience especially as the view of the stars is excellent from there too. It would make a fabulous romantic getaway!
Food was very nice. Not outstanding but very palatable.
The main downpoint- other than being the only guests!- was the pool. It didn't look very inviting. On first glance it appeared that the bottom was covered with slimy gunge. We later decided that it had actually been painted a terracotta colour which was peeling off :(
I'd love to return but only if there were other guests! It's too lonely on your own!
Recommend having a tour of the fort- well worth it!
