“nice hotel with lots of sports facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2010

April 2010; resort zutphen

Hotel with good sports facilities, such as tennis courts (indoors and outdoors), squash courts, bowling. Those are used by the locals at well. There is a swimming pool, large enough to swim laps (10 meters or so), not clear whether the pool is accessible for non-guests.
Despite the name “resort”, the character of the hotel feels more like a pleasant business hotel, but it will be a very comfortable hotel for other visitors as well.
Ok, the location is nothing exciting, on the outskirts of Zutphen it seems. But bicycles can be hired, and there is plenty of parking space for your car. And the facilities make up for the location.
Rooms are excellent, with huge double/king size bed (one huge mattress, so no annoying gap, but they do have rooms with two singles as well, so state your preference), wide screen tv (remote control with sleep timer!), coffee and tea facilities and free wireless throughout the hotel, including in de rooms. In the room there is a safe large enough for a (small) laptop. 11 inch fitted, not sure whether a 15-17 inch would fit.
The bathroom has a bath and shower (in the bath) with good water pressure.

It is a sports hotel, so the huge soccer photo on the wall is taken for granted, although I would have preferred something more colourful. But I liked the fresh looking laminate floors in the hotel, including in the hotel room.

Food was fine, excellent breakfast and lunch buffet, staff was very friendly, would definitely recommend this hotel for private or business visits.

“sad, sad hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2007

We were triggered by the hotel's offer for a 'romantic getaway in a luxury hotel'.

At arrival, we immediately started hoping that the hotel's outside didn't reflect the state of the rooms. Very uninspiring seventies property.

Unfortunately the room was worse. A smelly, very tiny and outdated room. The tv's remote felt a bit greasy. Why did they present themselves as romantic and luxurious? So we set out to explore the pool area. As pools aren't all that self evident in The Netherlands, we were hoping that part of the hotel would make the stay still worthwile.

The strong smell of chlorine directed us to the pool area. The pool itself reminded me of my swimming lessons back in the seventies. A very unpleasant, unwelcoming environment. There was a an old man changing from swimming trunks back into his underpants at the side of the pool.

What a sad, sad hotel. We decided to checkout, have a stroll through (the lovely town of) Zutphen and drive home the same evening.

We enjoyed our own bedroom twice as much as usual!

“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2007

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night in the middle of January. 4 of us travelled and between us we had 2 single rooms and a double.

The hotel was well sign posted in Zutphen so we arrived with no problems. There was ample parking outside and the hotel looked fine.

We were completely satisfied with check-in, the receptionist we spoke to knew english very well. We found the hotel in general to be very clean and tastefully decorated. We were impressed too with the rooms. There was a TV with plenty of english channels, tea and coffee facilities and a very nice bathroom. The beds and pillows were very comfortable (or was it that we were very tired), there was no smell of smoke in any of our rooms and there was no noise as the hotel is not next to any busy main roads.

We did not eat our evening meal in the hotel but there are plenty of places nearby. After we came back from the hotel we went into both bars for some drinks, the service and atmosphere was excellent. In the morning we were impressed too with breakfast - a good choice of cereals, spreads and 3 lots of hot food (bacon, eggs - scrambled/boiled).

The hotel has many facilities - squash, tennis, 10 pin bowling lanes, internet access and a swimming pool.

We would definately recommend this hotel to anyone needing to stay in the area!

“rooms not that great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2007

After arriving at the hotel I was a little nervous as from the outside it did not look too great, however when I entered the lobby I was pleasantly surprised by its modern interior and my fellow travellers and I were warnly greeted by the reception staff.

I was disappointed with my room which I could only describe as 'tired' however it was clean which in my opinion is the most important factor. I think that I may have been unlucky and got a room which hadn't been redecorated for a while as the rooms of my companions were far nicer.

I asked the reception staff if I could borrow an iron and ironing board and was told that I had to come to reception to collect them myself. I went to reception and was given the ironing board but no iron, I was then told that they would get the iron to me in a few minutes. After waiting for an hour I went back down to reception to be told that they could not find the iron (apparently there was only one in the whole of the hotel?!) and so I gave up and went to the old remedy of hanging my clothes in the bathroom and running the shower.

The only other annoyance was the hairdryer which was one of those units in the bathroom which emits hardly any warm air and takes forever to dry hair. I would advise anyone who has hair on the longer side to take their own travel hairdryer. I also noticed that I had no tea / coffee making facilities in my room whereas the other 5 people I was travelling with did (despite paying the same room rate).

On the plus side the breakfast and evening meals were lovely (I highly recommend the fillet steak which was delicious) although the service was not the quickest. I also would warn people to beware of the giant twig arrangement in the middle of the dining room as myself and my fellow companions (as well as others in the dining room) got caught on it on a number of occasions (my friend actually ripped her top on it).

All in all I thought that the hotel was okay, I slept well and would stay there again (although I'd cross my fingers for a better room)

“Had a great time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2006

Stayed at the Golden Tulip Inntel, situated in a traffic free square, from 28th Jan to 31st Jan this year with my partner and had a great time! The hotel is close to the train station but take a good street map as we wandered around for about 15 minutes trying to find it! It is a great central location and all main attractions are walkable; there are some good restaurants nearby and some lovely pubs! We booked with Thomas Cook on the internet (hotel only) and selected a double room with an inclusive breakfast option, 3 nights was around £200. This was a great idea as the restaurant was pricey; it only costs 5 euros to get breakfast in your room as well which gave us an extra hour to relax and get ready. Rooms are comfortable and clean although the double bed is actually two singles pushed together!! Overall the standard was good. Staff are helpful and friendly & we'd certainly go again.
