“The Real Jamaica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This resort is no all-inclusive...and thank goodness for that! With mega resorts cropping up everywhere, it's nice to know you can still find a place where the whole staff addresses you by name, knows your likes and dislikes and caters to your every need. Courtney and Roger took excellent care of us at the bar, as did the beautiful and friendly young ladies at breakfast and dinner. We were served pizza and drinks on the beach...it doesn't get much better! Johanne, the lovely owner of Moxons, spoke with us personally many times during our 6-night stay and even offered several times to drive us in to Ochi (Ocho Rios) so we wouldn't have to cab it. She soon learned we much preferred to walk with the locals up into the mountains of Retreat, Content to enjoy the scenery and jerk chicken and down to the ocean to have drinks at the Sugar Pot with Deiridre and her daughter. Because of it's off-the-beaten-path location, Moxons makes the perfect starting point for discovering the real Jamaica. Stewart Town, right next to the resort and quiet all week, came alive on Saturday morning, with lots of people walking, shopping and laughing. Not far away are many local bars and spots for some of the best jerk chicken you'll find. We ate some very good chicken at Fisherman's Beach and some even better chicken up in the mountainous rainforest. We walked by huge privately-owned estates, Ian Fleming International Airport and homes in the Rio Nuevo Development, dreaming of what life would be like living here. Each room at Moxons is unique. We had a suite with living area, dining area, kitchenette and separate king bedroom. Our friends had a room with an elevated king bed right next to french doors opening out onto an expansive balcony on the top level. The loudest things we heard were the crashing waves and the crickets at night. My husband and I actually visited Moxons in February of 1985 for dinner. The place never left our minds and though we visited to have lunch or dinner 3 or 4 times over the years in between, this was the first time we stayed. We are planning to return again between Christmas and New Years with our children to once again enjoy the hospitality, service and personal attention you'll never get at an all-inclusive. Merci, Johanne! A bientot!

“Just what we wanted!”

Went to Jamaica to visit family but didnt want to stay with family and wanted somewhere to put our heads down at night. Moxons was perfect, great location, clean, friendly and very safe. We had breakfast there in the mornings and went out allday and came back at night. The rooms where perfect for the three of us, cleaned daily by friendly staff. I am a FUSSY PERSON WHO LIKES HOME COMFORTS and I could not fault this hotel. So if you are looking for a quite relaxing place out of the hustle and bustle then this is it. We stayed for 10 days - 29th dec to 8th jan - so it was abit quite but it was fine for us. Thanks to everyone at moxons for looking after us and for room upgrade. Will return in December for sure. xxx

“A Hidden Treasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Pass through the entrance gate to Moxon's and you will find a wonderful respite from the ubiquitous and aggressive vendors of the shopping areas.

We received a warm welcome from Ray and Azaela as we checked in. We followed Ray as he carried our luggage through a lovely courtyard and down the stairs to our oceanfront room #101. Be prepared to climb some stairs here because the hotel is built into the side of a cliff. Nothing difficult unless you have problems with stairs. 15 steps to get to the restaurant. Maybe 15 more to get to the front desk.

Our room was located literally 15-20 feet from the water with a private balcony overlooking the small beach area and private cove. The room was very clean and comfortable. There was a small kitchenette with a bar refrigerator, toaster oven and microwave. It was a nice touch for mornings when we just wanted toast and coffee in the room. Nothing plush or luxurious here but it was just what we were looking for. It is the kind of place I would expect to see someone like a celebrity who wanted to go to a small comfortable location and not be seen. We were given a tour of several empty rooms and each one was unique. Most had private decks or balconies. Johanne (Miss Mac) MacMurray, the owner, bought the property which included the restaurant and built eighteen rooms around it.

The food in the restaurant was excellent. We usually tried Jamaican specialties. This is not fast food. The meals were made from scratch so we would have a drink while enjoying the ocean views from our table. The meals would arrive in about thirty minutes. My wife has many food allergies and in tolerances. The staff did a wonderful job of making sure each of her meals were prepared for her special dietary needs. One evening we asked what breadfruit was. The chef went to an adjacent tropical area and came back with one. He prepared it as a side dish for our dinner and fried the remainder the next morning with the Jamaican breakfast. The staff went overboard to pamper us during our stay.

All in all it was a very pleasant and relaxing week. All of the staff provided extraordinary service. Jenieve and Francine were great waitresses. Roger the bartender was personable and accommodating. I don't remember the names of the two chefs, but they were great.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are oceanside. Just determine how much space you want.

“Lovely small secluded hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

Moxons is a few hours drive in a shared shuttle from the Montego Bay airport, but it is well worth it to get away from the crowd of tourists staying in the mega-resorts with all-inclusive amenities. Moxons, the the other hand, was calm, relaxing and charming. Our little aottage (room101) was the closest to the sea. We had a perfect sea view from our windows and from our private balcony. Not all rooms have kitchenettes, but ours did. We ate most of our meals at the fabulous Moxons Restaurant. The food was excellent, even though it was rather highly priced. This place has an excellent staff that is very attentive to guests needs. There's not much of a beach, but the boardwalks are a great place to sit by the sea, get some sun, swim, snorkel, or take out a kayak (free equipment may be borrowed by the hotel. The hotel is sparkling cleam. If you cannot deal with lots of steps, this is not the place for you. The hotel is built into the side of a steep cliff, so walking down many stairs is the only way to reach the beach.

Room Tip: Rooms 101 and 102 are the most private and have great sea views. All of the other room seemed equall...
