“Nice hotel, great breakfast”

Pleasant hotel about 10 minutes' walk from the train station. We asked for a room in the old part of the hotel but were given one in the new part - which was pleasant and comfortable if not particularly outstanding given the price. The views are amazing as they are from everywhere in Kandersteg. Breakfast is really superb with a great selection of breads, spreads, cold meats and cheeses, eggs and pretty much anything else you could want.

“The attitude of the hotel manager (owner?) spoiled my visit to this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

This was a fairly average establishment, and not as nice as many of the other hotels in town. But what really turned me off was the consistant unpleasant demenor of the manager. She never smiled! She seemed to be anoyed with any and all requests for service. When a friend was injured and had to take a taxi to the next town for medical care, she contacted the clinic and asked to be called so she could pick her up and bring her back to the hotel. I thought that was amazing until checkout when it was discovered she had added a charge to the bill that was twice the cost of the taxi! She was so unpleasant that most people in our group were talking about it by the third day of our week there. I would never go back to this hotel even though the price was a bit lower.

“Fantastic food, beautiful views, spacious room, wonderful hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2009

We arrived in Kandersteg with a reservation at a different hotel. After experiencing some difficulty with the manager, we walked down the road and were able to get a room at this hotel. The owner was very nice and gave us a choice of three rooms. We settled into one in the new section. It was large, airy, with plenty of storage space, a sitting area and internet access in the room (which was important to us as we needed to maintain contact with our business at home). It also had a balcony with wonderful views of the Alps.
Everyone we encountered at the hotel was great. The owner was very helpful when we had questions or needed help with something. The wait staff was so nice. The food was FANTASTIC! We had dinner there the entire week and were trying to get the chef to come home with us! We had some of the best soups we ever tasted, lovely salads, and main courses that were very flavorful. We never had room for dessert but the selections looked delicious.
The hotel is located on the main road, about a four-five minute walk from the train station and was nice and quiet. We were in town for the hiking and the hotel was perfectly situated for walking to hiking trails or jumping on the bus or train for more remote trailheads.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay and we'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

“NIce but with some problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2009

I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights, as I was visiting Kandersteg for a wedding. The town itself is a little piece of paradise - absolutely charming! Blumlisalp is located in the center of the town so one can walk everywhere. It is owned by a very nice family. My room was large and very clean but bit outdated. The TV was tiny and there was no Internet available in the room. For the 3 days that I was there I took 2 cold showers. I am not sure why there was no hot water but that was bit frustrating. Other than that I had a very pleasent stay.

“Understated Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2007

We spent one week in the town of Kandersteg during July 2007 (as part of a nine week tour of Europe) and spent all our time in this town at the Hotel Blumlisalp which we would recommend to others.

The Hotel Blumlisalp is an intimate, family run hotel located in the centre of the town. We stayed in the new chalet (rather than in the older rooms) and were very pleased with the new, modern, clean, non-smoking room we received (Room 107). Although the new part is more expensive that the old part of the hotel, it was well worth the extra money. The room was very generous in size with ample storage space and a sitting area with couch and chair. The bathroom was brand new and although rather small, was adequate. Our room had a large balcony with pleasant views of the Alps and we spent a couple of evenings enjoying the view.

We took the half board hikers package which meant we had breakfast and dinner included in our package each day. The food at this hotel was quite different to the food we had at other Swiss hotels – much lighter and without heavy sauces. It was very tasty and the hotel did an excellent job of catering to our request for no red meat. The layout of the restaurant was conducive to meeting other guests, most of whom were Swiss.

The hotel has good facilities which include the restaurant, a terrace with views of the Alps, a general lounge area with games and library, a self service laundry and a basic wellness area. There is a computer in the shared area with Internet access available to all guests for free.

Staff were obliging and tended to stay very much in the background - we would have liked a little more interaction from the owners who kept a low profile.

The town of Kandersteg is located in the Bernese Oberland region and should be the postcard example for a Swiss Germanic mountain town. It is extremely picturesque, well laid out, neat, tidy and beautifully presented. Although the town is not a car-free resort - unlike the other Swiss mountain towns we visited - the traffic is very low key and quiet. It is frequented predominantly by the Swiss rather than tourists and as a consequence has a distinctly Swiss feel to it. Not everyone speaks English so we had some entertaining situations given that we cannot speak German or French. The most amazing sight we saw however, was the shopkeepers leaving all their wares out in the street on display over lunch and even over the weekend when the shops were closed. In Australia where we live, the stock would be stolen within an hour, but in the town of Kandersteg theft is clearly not on the agenda!!!!

The hiking in the area around Kandersteg was excellent, however we felt that it was more strenuous than the hiking available in the more touristy areas we visited such as Wengen and Murren. The highlight or our hiking was when we came across an elusive ibex and her kid which apparently are quite common in the area.

Overall, we enjoyed our time at this town and this hotel and would recommend it for keen, fit walkers who are looking for an authentic Swiss mountain town experience.
