“Excellent location for stunning views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Positive:
My room was large, clean, well presented and I had great views from my balcony. The food was very nice if a bit pricey. The staff spoke good english and were very helpfull when required.
Negative:
The flies. There were flies everywhere, not just in the hotel but around the whole town. I was amazed to find that no measures seemed to be taken to deter the flies from the restaurant. Maybe some sort of insectocuter or even fly paper would have been better than having to constantly waft flies off your food. Also the rooms did not have air conditioning. And on another, rather petty note, when i use the small bar of soap provided in the room i expect it to be replaced daily with a fresh bar. Mine got so small that i eventualy lost it.

“We always come back”

We were unable to holiday last year due to illness but this year we returned to our
favourite hotel. We received a most wonderful reception and were looked after by our
excellent hosts Madi & Christian with their very attentive staff.
The rooms are most comfortable with excellent views of the area.
The cuisine is of the highest standard.
We could not have had a happier holiday and look forward to returning next
summer, if not sooner!

“Excellent and recommended”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

My wife, 74 year old father-in-law and I spent a week at this hotel in July 2011. We were met at the train station by the female owner and taken to the hotel a short five minute drive.
Booking in was fast and efficient and we were shown our room (No106) which is in the newer part of the hotel.
My wife and I room was very clean consisting of two very large single beds pushed together, a very comfortable mattress, duvet and pillow. We have patio doors that lead out to a balcony which spectacular views of the Alps. Our on suite was clean functional and had a walk in shower but no bath. There was ample storage space in room for our clothes. There was a small television in the room, we never put it on once, there is no need with that view. We were able to get wifi in our room.
The hotel is in the centre of town about a ten minute walk from the station. It has a dinning area a separate a la carte dinning room, lounge area, there is self service washing and tumble driers that need a small amount of money to operate, soap powder is supplied. There is also a sauna and Jacuzzi bath although the sauna was not on (in July no need). There was also a bar area and outside you could sip drinks after a days walking taking in the vista.
The food was excellent the male owner is the main chef. We have four/five courses every night which consisted of soup, salad, main then dessert all were off a high standard and seconds were always offered. We had a la carte one night when it was my father in laws birthday I had deep fried pike which was excellent. I consider myself a bit of a foodie and I could not fault what was presented. A good selection of wines as well.
The staff were excellent especially Mandy our waitress who was very attentive. The female owner even remembered it was my father in laws birthday, she must have looked at all the dates of birth on our check-in cards. Excellent piece of observation.
The tap water is better than ours in Scotland and I never thought I would say that.
There is also a free computer linked up to the internet on the first floor with aa printer with free paper perfect for printing off boarding cards.
The area itself is excellent for walking, my holidays usually consist of lying on a beach this completely out the norm for us. We did the Gemini Pass and several other walks on the good days, when it rained or was overcast we travelled through by train to Lake Maggario in Italy only two hours or Berne. The swiss rail system is the best in the world.
Would I recommend this hotel? The answer is yes it ticked all the boxes as did Switzerland.
As a side note Switzerland is very expensive 10 Swiss Francs for a Gin and Tonic but it was like that everywhere in Switzerland.

“Nice hotel, great breakfast”

Pleasant hotel about 10 minutes' walk from the train station. We asked for a room in the old part of the hotel but were given one in the new part - which was pleasant and comfortable if not particularly outstanding given the price. The views are amazing as they are from everywhere in Kandersteg. Breakfast is really superb with a great selection of breads, spreads, cold meats and cheeses, eggs and pretty much anything else you could want.

“The attitude of the hotel manager (owner?) spoiled my visit to this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

This was a fairly average establishment, and not as nice as many of the other hotels in town. But what really turned me off was the consistant unpleasant demenor of the manager. She never smiled! She seemed to be anoyed with any and all requests for service. When a friend was injured and had to take a taxi to the next town for medical care, she contacted the clinic and asked to be called so she could pick her up and bring her back to the hotel. I thought that was amazing until checkout when it was discovered she had added a charge to the bill that was twice the cost of the taxi! She was so unpleasant that most people in our group were talking about it by the third day of our week there. I would never go back to this hotel even though the price was a bit lower.
