We booked a double room for 2 persons for 7 nights just before Christmas. We originally had a room on the 2nd floor facing south (with a small view on the Matterhorn) but then asked to be moved further upstairs due to the smoke coming from the bar on the ground floor. Be sure to ask for a room from the 2nd floor if smoke is an issue for you. The stairs have no door on the 1st floor, but only on the 2nd floor. The rooms from 2nd floor and above are also quieter. Our room (345) was still facing south, with a balcony and a brand new bathroom. It looks like the hotel refurbished all the bathrooms.The furniture and style of the room was more modern on the 1st floor and Swiss traditional on the 3rd floor. But in overall, the rooms are very comfortable with plenty of room to store. Continental breakfast was good but choice limited... especially after the 2-3rd day of breakfast. The ski room was very convenient, never crowded and locked. Free wireless internet connection is also available for guests. The hotel is literally 20 steps away from the bus station to the main lift. Frequency of the bus was 8-10 min.
I highly recommend to use the numerous private parking-taxi companies as the service rendered was excellent and hassle free. We used ALPHUBEL taxi+parking company as they seem to be the only one offering reduction if you use both their parking and taxi service to/from Zermatt. We paid 122 CHF for 6 nights of in-door parking + round trip taxi fare to and from Zermatt... which I found very reasonable. They help you with your luggage and they also call your hotel so that the hotel electric car can come and pick you up at the drop station.
Restaurant wise I recommend the Swiss Chalet, the China Garden, the restaurant just facing the hotel entrance (don't remember the name anymore) and Zum See. The lamb in Zermatt is delicious.

We spent one night at the Excelsior Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland in July, 2008. The hotel was well situated, being a five minute walk from the main train station and a ten minute walk from the gondola station.
The room itself was excellent with a large living room and a large bedroom. We were given a room on the first floor, which was a suite. The view of the Matterhorn was exquisite The bathroom was modern and impeccable, with a separate bath and shower. Once again, the view was tops from the large glass doors in both the living room and the bedroom. The real clincher was the staff:
To begin, our infant was car sick on the ride into Tasch, and the manager had all her clothes laundered immediately at no cost and without any question. He refused payment for the service all together. Having traveled in Europe and Africa - this is a noteworthy exception to the rule at most hotels.
We will be staying at this hotel the next time we travel to Zermatt.

We were booked into this hotel by our Swiss agent and we were assigned the garret room, the only one, on the fifth floor. The elevator went to the fourth only so we had a flight to climb with the bags, no big deal.

The room was very spacious, with twin beds, a large couch and two easy chairs. It was newly renovated (or carved out of the attic space) with everything pristine including an interesting star-patterned carpet. The bath was small but adequate with a typical square Swiss shower with doors that slide shut.

There were two windows that provided plenty of ventilation during the chilly nights while we slept under down duvets.

Our dazzling view was directly up the valley to the Matterhorn.

Breakfast was served in the most charming room we experienced. It was completely panelled and furnished in beautiful knotty pine. The food was above average with some of the best rolls we tasted during our stay in Switzerland - from the bakery next store!

My wife and I stayed here 2 nights in April 2003. The room was quiet, comfortable, had a good amount of room with a clean, modern bathroom. Absolutely no complaints and I wouldn't hesitate to book it again or refer a friend!
