“Average comfortable family hotel, but no 'style' or 'class' to it”

I did a first hand review of Weggis hotels while I was staying at the Park Hotel Vitznau, as it will be closed for 2 years for renovation. Park Hotel Weggis was the first candidate. A helpful receptionist showed me the hotel and rooms....furnished in modern Swiss/Scandivian/International style..poky corridors.....no direct access to the lake and meagre indoor pool located away from the main building. A trip inside the Post Hotel revealed a lobby more suited to a nightclub and the disinterested staff member was enough to indicate this was only for the under 40's.
The Beau Rivage had received some good reviews. A request via e-mail for a dinner reservation was answered within an hour. An indequate car park (no space) and a gloomy rather smokey smelling entrance lobby and sitting room were an unpromising introduction. However the dining room was pleasant enough (Mr Geering had been kind enough to advise that the outside terrace was already fully booked) and I was somewhat fussed over during a perfectly adequate meal.......isn't it enough to be asked once if everything is alright?
Evidence of 'hands on' management is noticeable everywhere, even to the coloured plastic roses stuck in the awnings preumably as there were none in flower at the time.
A cursory survey of rooms and (rather cramped) corridors, confirmed to me that this hotel warrants its 3 star rating, no more, no less

“"Could be great, could be terrible - depends on the room"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

Having stayed at this hotel a few years ago I was looking forward to returning. However, the last time I stayed I had a lake-view room with a balcony, (having changed from a room overlooking the road) and it was very pleasant. This time I had asked for a nice, quiet room overlooking the lake and found the room was anything but quiet and had a small window instead of a balcony. Single rooms with balcony are the same price, double rooms with balconies are Superior and more expensive. This room overlooked the car-park, the terrace of the hotel's restaurant and the terrace of the restaurant of the hotel next door! Unsurprisingly, on a weekend many people were eating late so I couldn't get to sleep until well after midnight.

I realise that the hotel is "old fashioned" which accounts for some of its appeal but the temperature inside the small room and the lounges was really unbearable due to the lack of air conditioning. This problem is not likely to disappear due to climate changes. Other guests also complained about the heat in their rooms but air conditioning is rare in Switzerland.

I can only describe the bedroom, allocated to me, as spartan with less charm than a chain hotel and worthy of a 2 star hotel. The television was so small I could hardly see it. There was only one pillow and one small towel provided and the water in the shower took ages to drain away . Upon request to Reception two more pillows were sent up and a rickety old fan set up to combat the hot, stuffy atmosphere.

This really was a shame as the hotel has many assets including a small garden with a swimming pool and a wonderful situation directly on the lake. The lounges and restaurants are very comfortable and attractively decorated.

The breakfast was generous but the coffee tasted a bit odd. I would strongly recommend specifying that the room you book has a balcony and is situated away from the car park end if you are a light sleeper. It is best to get this confirmed before you arrive as complaints are not taken very well due possibly to the fact that the hotel has a lot of regular guests who are always complimentary. I had in the past recommended this hotel to several people, including family members but I will not be soing so in the future.

“gem on the lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2009

Great hotel - from the moment you walk in the staff show they are interested in your stay. A little old-fashioned in style but good old fashioned values and service. Agree with the comment about the average age of people in the hotel, but as a family with young children we didn't feel we stood out and would recommend to others. Std room was good size, clean and not old-fashioned, could easily accommodate 2 extra beds for children. Loved the little extras like chocolates in room and robes for use, double doors ensured no noise disturbances.
Restaurant food good - if you eat in might as well take half board (extra CHF50/adult) and there is a kids menu (CHF10-18).
Walking distance to Rigi cablecar and lake boat service.
Had a computer for guest use, but only 1.... a great improvement would be wireless access (only available through paying swisscom mobile).

“Great room, incredible views.”

We stayed at Beau Rivage for 4 nights. The room was very comfortable, actually large for European hotel. We were on the 2nd floor, and had our own balcony. Some rooms do not have a balcony by the way. The views of the lake and the mountains are stunning. The bathroom was roomy also; it had a tub with shower, and double sinks. The staff was very nice, but a little on the stiff side. Things there are very proper, almost formal. The clientele seemed to be on the much older side as in retirees. They dress up for dinner. The restaurant staff is very particular. Don't try to wear shorts into the restaurant for dinner. The food was good, and the service was very good.

We had two issues with our stay. First, the hotel has no air conditioning. Our room stayed warm even with the windows open, and detracted from our sleeping comfort. They brought us a fan that must have been twenty years old and very loud.

Second, we were there the week of the Rose Festival, and our first two nights the party outside down the street lasted until 2 a.m., and we could hear every word in our room. if you like to party with the Swiss, then the first week of July is right for you. Not a good way to recover from jet lag. This wasn't the hotel's fault; just thought you would want to know.

Also, the room rate seemed high considering what we paid later in Paris. We didn't feel like it was a great financial value, but hotels at Luzern are expensive.

They have a very nice heated pool, and an indoor whirlpool and steam room just off the pool. You can't beat laying in the lounge chairs looking at the mountains with the lake just feet away. And jump in the lake if you can handle the water from the Alps!

“Our own little paradise....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2009

It is very rare in life to find absolute perfection, certainly in a hotel. But we think we have found it...at the Hotel Beau Rivage in Weggis. We have stayed there on 86 nights in 10 different holidays dating back to 1990; it is by some distance our favourite Swiss hotel out of the 30 we have stayed in.

The level of service and attention provided by the owners Mr and Mrs Geering is legendary; their "hands-on" approach is a simple idea which many other hotels would do well to try and imitate.

Perhaps the most significant reason for the success of the Beau Rivage is that Mr and Mrs Geering never rest on their laurels, they are constantly striving to improve. As an example - I am a very keen swimmer, and one of the highlights of our now annual summer holiday in Weggis is swimming in the Vierwaldstaettersee - for 1hour 15 minutes at 5.30 am (!) then again at 5.45 pm. In the garden by the lakeside at the back of the hotel - what sensational flowers! - there are steps leading down into the lake. One always used to accept that stepping into the lake required great care to avoid the slippery and jagged rocks next to the shore. To my amazement, Mr Geering did not accept this and built - at great expense - a platform which now guarantees a painless entry and exit to and from the lake. It this attention to detail which elevates this hotel above others in my view.

We were absolutely delighted to celebrate our Silver Wedding at the Beau Rivage in 2005 - we were treated like a King and Queen, as always. Sadly my wife is not now in the best of health but as ever she - and I - look forward to our next stay in what has become for us (and I suspect many others) a little paradise on the shores of the Vierwaldstaettersee.
