“Top location in Weggis with old style charm and great dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2011

We returned to this familiar hotel once more in June, just for a 4 night stay, combining a business visit with a few days of relaxation.
As ever, our stay was generally excellent. The owners, Mr & Mrs Geering, maintain a standard of accommodation and fine dining that is hard to fault at the price. Their silver service dinners served on the terrace of their lake-view restaurant hark back to a more genteel era when music and fine dining combined in the grand locations of Europe and travellers and hoteliers built a lasting relationship leading to many return visits.
Many of the clientele at the Beau Rivage are indeed repeat visitors and a lot are older clients. There are few if any children. The attractions are the unbeatable position of the hotel, the excellent heated pool, the gardens, the restaurant, and the traditional feel of the place with its comfortable and homely furnishings.
However, if you want something hip or trendy, you won’t like it here; you should stay at the Post House Hotel instead – of course now branded the PoHo ! That establishment is full of bars, house and dance music, minimalist restaurants and rooms with plenty of hard surfaces in them.
At the Beau Rivage your focus will be on relaxation, dining, walking, and excursions. The proximity to the town centre, the boat landing, the band stand, the shops and cafes, all make for a convenience that is hard to beat.
Changes this year are few, but one absence was that of Madeleine, the former Head of Restaurant Service, and also Christian, who was also Head Waiter for many years. Both have moved on to other things, but have been replaced by new and well trained staff.
One new thing is that there is now an option to have bed and breakfast or half board, the latter also giving you a further choice of 3 or 5 course dinners. Added to this there is ‘A la Carte’ dining always available. All the food options are very good.
In this time of weak pounds and US dollar but high Swiss franc values, this hotel may seem expensive to many overseas travellers. But it is unfair to factor in currency values. When compared against any comparable Swiss hotel the costs here are reasonable, considering the location, facilities and dining.
Nothing is quite perfect; we felt that one suggestion to improve the hotel would be to move the bar location. Currently the bar is a tiny room hidden behind the indoor dining room and it is usually empty. There are also two large lounges filled with sofas, which are excellent light rooms. Surely it would be better to locate the bar in one of those. This would make a focus for pre-dinner drinks, or late nightcaps that doesn’t exist now. By doing this, the evening atmosphere would be improved.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone and we’ll be back, when time and finances allow.

“Beautiful location and very friendly and efficient staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

We stayed on the second floor in a room with a terrace / balcony and wonderful view over Lake Lucerne. The staff were without exception friendly and efficient. The restaurant food was excellent and the wine list comprehensive. We really enjoyed our week's quiet stay sitting in the garden watching the ferries go by on the lake. Wonderful!

“Average comfortable family hotel, but no 'style' or 'class' to it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2009

I did a first hand review of Weggis hotels while I was staying at the Park Hotel Vitznau, as it will be closed for 2 years for renovation. Park Hotel Weggis was the first candidate. A helpful receptionist showed me the hotel and rooms....furnished in modern Swiss/Scandivian/International style..poky corridors.....no direct access to the lake and meagre indoor pool located away from the main building. A trip inside the Post Hotel revealed a lobby more suited to a nightclub and the disinterested staff member was enough to indicate this was only for the under 40's.
The Beau Rivage had received some good reviews. A request via e-mail for a dinner reservation was answered within an hour. An indequate car park (no space) and a gloomy rather smokey smelling entrance lobby and sitting room were an unpromising introduction. However the dining room was pleasant enough (Mr Geering had been kind enough to advise that the outside terrace was already fully booked) and I was somewhat fussed over during a perfectly adequate meal.......isn't it enough to be asked once if everything is alright?
Evidence of 'hands on' management is noticeable everywhere, even to the coloured plastic roses stuck in the awnings preumably as there were none in flower at the time.
A cursory survey of rooms and (rather cramped) corridors, confirmed to me that this hotel warrants its 3 star rating, no more, no less

“"Could be great, could be terrible - depends on the room"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

Having stayed at this hotel a few years ago I was looking forward to returning. However, the last time I stayed I had a lake-view room with a balcony, (having changed from a room overlooking the road) and it was very pleasant. This time I had asked for a nice, quiet room overlooking the lake and found the room was anything but quiet and had a small window instead of a balcony. Single rooms with balcony are the same price, double rooms with balconies are Superior and more expensive. This room overlooked the car-park, the terrace of the hotel's restaurant and the terrace of the restaurant of the hotel next door! Unsurprisingly, on a weekend many people were eating late so I couldn't get to sleep until well after midnight.

I realise that the hotel is "old fashioned" which accounts for some of its appeal but the temperature inside the small room and the lounges was really unbearable due to the lack of air conditioning. This problem is not likely to disappear due to climate changes. Other guests also complained about the heat in their rooms but air conditioning is rare in Switzerland.

I can only describe the bedroom, allocated to me, as spartan with less charm than a chain hotel and worthy of a 2 star hotel. The television was so small I could hardly see it. There was only one pillow and one small towel provided and the water in the shower took ages to drain away . Upon request to Reception two more pillows were sent up and a rickety old fan set up to combat the hot, stuffy atmosphere.

This really was a shame as the hotel has many assets including a small garden with a swimming pool and a wonderful situation directly on the lake. The lounges and restaurants are very comfortable and attractively decorated.

The breakfast was generous but the coffee tasted a bit odd. I would strongly recommend specifying that the room you book has a balcony and is situated away from the car park end if you are a light sleeper. It is best to get this confirmed before you arrive as complaints are not taken very well due possibly to the fact that the hotel has a lot of regular guests who are always complimentary. I had in the past recommended this hotel to several people, including family members but I will not be soing so in the future.
