We have just returned from a week's stay at the RoyAlp. We were very pleased with our visit and I would be happy to return (tomorrow if I had the time and money!). The rate that we got changed over the period but was an average of 357CHF per room per night including breakfast. We used booking.com which, at that time, offered a much better rate than I could get either with the hotel or a number of other booking sites that I looked at.
Whilst thinking of breakfast, I read that if one joins the Luxury Hotels of the World loyalty scheme ($150 for a year) you get a free continental breakfast for two each day that you stay at a "Luxury Hotel of the World". I don't think the hotel's standard rates include breakfast and I saw it cost 35CHF per person so the loyalty scheme could well be worth it. It also offers an upgrade on check-in if available.
Both of the rooms that we had were the base category on the standard side of the hotel. They were both a good size but varied quite a bit. One room had a WC and basin in a totally separate room than the bathroom and the other had the WC in a small room off the bathroom with a glass frosted door. Both had plenty of space but I guess the former would be better if sharing the room with someone. The first room was a bit bigger than the second and had a balcony. The bathrooms in both were beautiful and had large corner baths and separate "rain" showers.
The first room had a small dining table with two chairs, a desk and two small occasional chairs whilst the second had none of those three but did have a comfortable day bed.
Both rooms were too hot when we arrived. Before I booked I saw that a previous poster had said that their room was too hot and that there was no way to change the temperature. In fact the heating is computer controlled and can be adjusted by the front desk on request. The first receptionist I asked said she'd have it done the next day. I wasn't happy with that and asked her to call someone to find out how she could do it. She seemed happy to do this and the rooms soon cooled down. They also sent quite smart fans to both rooms to make sure we were cool enough.
The sheets were beautifully soft and changed every day. Likewise the pillows were excellent. The beds are two singles pushed together and the hotel provides two single duvets. As I stayed on my own I didn't like this much but guess it would be good for a couple.
Breakfast was lovely and consisted of a buffet with an excellent selection of all of the usual items including lovely fresh orange juice. Service at breakfast time was variable. There were plenty of staff but they sometimes seemed more interested in doing anything other than serving the customers. I told the front desk about the experience and the service was then good for the rest of the week. The service that we received at dinner was always excellent. We ate in both the Rochegrise (twice) and the Swiss Restaurant. Both expensive but neither significantly more so than the restaurants that we went to in the Village. In my mind they offered good value as the quality of the food was better than most of the village's offering. That said, the food and service were good on the two occasions that I went to "Le Tisonnier" which is a very cosy restaurant in the village and seemed to be owned by and is underneath "Le Sporting". The staff were lovely and I'd recommend booking a table near the fire. They were closed one night that we tried to go so weren't open every night mid season.
I went to the RoyAlp's spa every day. The pool area is great and I loved both the massage jets in the pool and lounging by the fireplace with my book. They offer complimentary teas and fresh fruit in the spa reception. A good place to visit pre-spa when hungry after skiing!
The concierge and shuttle bus drivers were great. I was delighted with the service they provided. I wouldn't bother having a car in the resort as the shuttle always came quickly when we called for it. We booked the private Cinema one day. It was nicely appointed although not all that comfy and we weren't allowed to take drinks into it. The hotel's list of DVDs is limited. Perhaps worth taking your own to watch?
