“Great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We stayed 1 week at the Hotel Allalin in middle January and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. Saas-Fee is a terrific town which is quaint, quiet with good skiing, sledding, hiking, etc. in the mountains around the town.

We booked a Superior Double and on check-in requested a room change (another Superior Double with a different view) which the owner (who personally checked us in) accommodated very easily. The room was exactly what was pictured and was properly cleaned when we came in. The hotel offers a breakfast buffet each morning which was good and they offered scrambled eggs/omelets on request and were always on hand for more coffee/tea/etc. Each day we were able to begin breakfast up until 10am (the cut-off) and the staff were even nice enough to offer to get us food when we slept in past 10am one day.

The room was always cleaned during the day and when we requested additional towels the front desk happily gave them to us. We did run out of soap/shampoo/tissues a few days in and the cleaning service did not replace it so we had to call (which was just a slight inconvenience) but within minutes they were all brought up to us.

We, unfortunately, only ate dinner at their restaurant one evening...unfortunate because it was exceptionally good - the best we had in Saas-Fee. We have lived in Geneva for approx. 8 months and are used to (what we consider) questionable meat quality across Switzerland. But, what we had in their restaurant was fantastic - and definitely one of the best meals we’ve had in Switzerland since we've been living here. We highly recommend eating there your first night to get a taste and see if the half-board option is best for you.

The hotel offered to pick us up at the bus station, take us back to the bus station when we left, and also helped drive our ski gear to their ski room near the Alpin Express on our first and last days - extremely helpful.

Towards the end of our trip my wife became very ill and the hotel staff was amazingly kind and caring to her. In fact, I think it seemed like all of the staff was told she was sick and when they saw her/us asked her if she was OK and if there was anything they could do for her. This helped create a very friendly (bordering family) feel to our stay. In fact, on several occasions we had the opportunity to talk to the owner while eating or having a drink at the bar and that personable touch was truly appreciated.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay. If we had to offer some suggestions it would be only two things:

1) The wellness center seemed a bit dated (although in our opinion it was not, as another reviewer wrote, unclean). Things just looked a little old. The sauna did not work one day but was fixed the next and the same for the jacuzzi/whirlpool. The wellness center is a bit small but as the hotel is also small it may be well sized.

2) The elevator can be a bit loud and it looks quite old (but worked without issue our entire stay). We could hear it move between floors each time it ran but luckily people were not using it much past 11pm or before 7am.

Again, overall, we had a wonderful stay and were very thankful we stayed at the Allalin. The staff was tremendously nice (we had lots of questions and can be particular about certain things which they were very accommodating towards) and the experience was great. We highly recommend Hotel Allalin and would happily stay there again.

Dear Dr-Pickle, thank you for your review. We are glad you have enjoyed your stay in Saas Fee and at our Hotel Allalin. As not all of our superior rooms look the same we are always open to try to accommodate our guests' whishes regarding a specific room. Thank you for the note on the elevator. We are at the moment in contact with our elevator engineer with regards to the noise and will fix it as soon as possible.
We hope your wife has fully recovered and that we can welcome you again in future, Geneva is just a short ride away!

“pleasant hotel. we'll beback”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2011

nice big room w/balcony very clean. We stayed 4 nights.
as it is a vacation place we missed room facilities for making coffee or tea. We asked at the hotel restaurant for a tea bag as I felt sick. and were charged for 3.70 sfr,
also we came to breakfast at 8:45 (served until 10:00) and buffet was almost empty after an early group and they did not refill.

Dear Muki45, thank you for your review. We apologize for the inconvenience with regards to the tea and coffee making facilities. We don’t have the facilities in the rooms but do offer our guests to bring a kettle (free of charge) to the room on request. As a hotel policy, any consumption outside breakfast or dinner hours (in case of half board) at the restaurant is charged for as it is not included in the room rate. Thank you for your note on the breakfast buffet. We will make sure to instruct our personnel better and would like to apologize for this. Nevertheless, we hope to have the pleasure to accommodate you again one day.

“Fantastic- excellent food and service !!”

We have just returned from a lovely week at the Allalin and were really impressed by the hotel. The waiters/waitresses are wonderfully attentive and the food is really very impressive. My children loved the fact that they could play on the swings/table tennis whilst we sat through our 5 courses each night. It is a very child friendly hotel and Jose the waiter was fabulous -good fun yet professional and my kids miss him already ! Saas fee is a beautiful resort and although it's expensive it is possible to buy drinks etc from the local supermarkets without breaking the bank (can of coke 60p) and wine at the hotel can be purchased by the half bottle at around 19 francs- and it's delicious ! The weather was glorious and we would highly recommend this holiday destination !

“An excellent hotel in a superb hiking area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

The whole team at Allalin were wonderful - totally professional but very friendly too. It was most enjoyable to chat with them all, they were really interesting people.
I have to adhere to a strictly gluten free diet and they took enormous trouble to get this right. And also each day there was delicious fresh bread for me.
Our room and bathroom were very spacious, light, bright and modern. We had a south-facing room and balcony (thank you too to Inghams - we often prefer to travel independently but did very well with this tour firm). There was a large TV with about 400 channels, lots of cupboard space and clothes hangers, very good toiletries, a proper hairdryer, and ample towels each day. The shower screen was a challenge - you have to avoid flooding the floor and perhaps an additional curtain would be good - even tho' that would spoil the elegant minimalist style.
The hotel is very conveniently situated for summer hiking - near to the shops and close to the bus station. We found it best to have the window closed at night as there was some noise from people in the street below.
A comment for Tripadvisor: We feel it is wrong / misleading to include reviews which are more than, say, five years old. We were very nearly put off this hotel because of photos showing dark, rustic little rooms and also some long-ago adverse comments.
Please give some thought to this.

Room Tip: Our room was 37, lovely views

Dear Cotterrell,
We would like to thank you for your nice review. We do have quite frequently guests with special dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, lactose free) and are our kitchen team is used to providing special meals on request. We are glad you were happy with our service and that you liked your room in general. Saas fee is a beautiful spot to hike in summer and we would be pleased to welcome you and your husband again at the Allalin.

“Once agin, a great stay at Allalin!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

This family-run hotel in the wonderful site of the Alps is a perfect compliment for what ever takes you to Saas Fee. The owners are always there making sure all your needs are satisfied, and the rest of the staff is specially nice and helpful. The rooms,(most with balconies) and the bathrooms are immaculately clean and spacious, and beds are very comfortable. There is an ample social area, and the restaurant has a gourmet standard even when food is for groups. I have been there twice and will stay there again and again!
