We stayed at the 3 star Hotel Astoria www.astoria-saasfee.ch in Saas Fee, Switzerland in February 2007. The hotel is well located being about 200m from the Alpin Express lift and close to the centre of things. It is a small establishment of some 30+ rooms and does not offer lunch or dinner. Breakfast however is excellent with a range of cereals, wonderful fresh breads, rolls & croissants, with a hot offering (for instance boiled eggs, scrambled egg & bacon) and some cold meats and cheese.
Frau Burgener and the staff are always helpful and polite and although, like most of Saas Fee, they cater primarily to German-speaking guests, their English was more than adequate for our needs.
The rooms we had were clean with traditionally-styled but modern limed-wood furniture and real wood laminate flooring or carpet. All rooms are en-suite with TV (some UK channels such as BBC Prime and Sky News), phone, radio/clock and safe, but no kettle, refrigerator or mini-bar. Although the mattresses were acceptable we felt the quality of the bedding (pillows, sheets & duvet) was poor.
Downstairs there is a seating area with a pool table and in the early evenings you can order drinks. It is not particularly cosy however so you will probably prefer to go elsewhere for drinks. As you will be eating out in the evenings in any case (make sure to book the previous day!) this is not a problem. There is also free wireless internet (provided you have brought your laptop.)
In the basement as well as the storerooms for skis and boots there is a wellness suite with sauna, steamroom, fancy shower, jacuzzi and exercise bike - all free of charge.
There is a simple and fast lift which actually saves time as well as effort.
All in all we heartily recommend Hotel Astoria. Everything worked, and it was a perfect base for a great skiing holiday in Saas Fee. And even in peak season Frau Burgener does not insist on Saturday-Saturday bookings.
