We really enjoyed our stay at the Sasserhof. The hotel is very charming and the staff were excellent.
Its only 42 out of 56 hotels today on tripadvisor though I can only assume that is due to not enough reviews banked yet as it has been given 4 out of 5 by most and really was an excellent choice. Book it!
The food was fantastic - buffet breakfast had a large varied choice (breads, meat, egg, cereal, yogurts, croissants, salmon, juice, cheese) and was fresh and tasty or you could also order fried eggs, omelette etc from the kitchen. The evening meals were some of the best we have had and we are well travelled! They were beautifully presented with great flavour balance and a highlight to every evening. Just excellent. The restaurant staff were great, esp. Lara and Laura! The family who run the hotel also eat there in the evenings sometimes (a good sign) and were very helpful and polite.
The room we had was good and we were upgraded which was a nice touch to room 106. Rooms are clean and modern, with a safe and we had two balconies and a nice bathroom, TV with some English channels, a mini fridge and plenty of room. The ski/boot room was useful. We didn’t use the spa (a naked old man put me off!).
The hotel is a great location next to / on the slopes near the nursery slopes/meeting place and the Felskinn Cable Car. There is a nice blue run practice area just outside the hotel. To get to the Alpine Express, take the T bar up from the nursery slopes towards Felskinn, then ski across the blue run and take the route down past Plattjen and onto the Alpine. The hotel is in the best end of town where the apres ski bars are too.
The Skiing and area:
Best skiing for me was between the 3000m and 2500m between Morenia and Felskinn Top Station - I am early intermediate and blue run 4 was lovely and great to practice on. You can get back up via the T Bar in front of Morenia and start again or ski past Morenia (stick to the right for the blue) and then cut across the red and go back up on the chair lift (this bottom section is a little steeper than the top which is gentle). The blue from Morenia back to town was hard work and had a couple of nasty sections so fine for good skiers but beware if you are new to it or just avoid it and go back on the Alpine and walk to hotel across town which is not far or go back up to 3500m and come back to this end of town of the Felskinn, ski down the nursery slope and get yourself a beer at the bars!
Saas Fee is a very pretty car free alpine village and the views are amazing. The skiing can be hard work as the lift system, due to the glacier, has a lot of steps and walking between lifts. Plus lots of T Bars and drag lifts. That said, the ski area was so high, full of snow and breathtaking so it was all worth it. The slopes were generally quiet and we never had to queue for a cable car or lift which was a real plus factor. The weather was changeable with a mixture of sunny and overcast days and one bad one.
Do visit the Ice Pavilion at the 3500m top station – it was great fun. Also, the revolving restaurant at
Allalin had amazing views (and soup was tasty and reasonably priced for such a place at 9 to 12 CHF). Do take cash with you as mountain places don’t often take cards.
I would definitely return to this hotel if I come back to Saas Fee and I would recommend it.
