The Saaserhof is a charming and immaculately clean hotel. We stayed in a so-called family room with two primary school aged children. The room was very small and there were only three chairs for four of us. Also the toilet, wash room and shower all occupied tiny separate cubicles. The shower room was so small that It was almost impossible to shower without continuously knocking the settings subjecting oneself to intermittent freezing and scolding. However, given the overall range of facilities and excellent location we would consider staying there again.
However, there is a big BUT concerning the dining. The food was superb, albeit that some of the menus were lost in translation. An excellent creme brulee was served as 'burned custard' for example. What ruined the experience was the length of time it took to get through the meals. One and a half hours to complete all courses was an achievement; two hours more typical. it didn't seem to matter whether we went down early or late, the effect was always the same. Overall our children found the time sitting in the restaurant too much following a busy and strenuous day's activities; we had to resort to littering our table with a plethora of puzzles, colouring books, drawing equipment and so on just to maintain sanity for ourselves and other guests. One night we intended to visit a folk concert which was scheduled to begin at 8.30pm. We arrived in the restaurant shortly after it opened (6.30pm) explained our intentions to the staff and received numerous reassurances that we would be able to leave by 8.00pm. We eventually dashed out at 8.25pm having missed one course. We just could not find a way of speeding things up. No course would begin to be prepared until the previous one had been cleared away no matter how much we asked the staff to hurry things along.
Overall the dining speed was a negative factor and realistically ruined any scope for doing things in the evenings. However, as stated earlier, the rest of the hotel is charming, clean and has friendly staff. Some of its quirks were positively delightful, especially the wellness area and our thwarted attempts to get out of an evening were offset by spending what seemed hours on the balcony watching the robotic lawn mower going about its task - the children were captivated by this and unsuccessfully tried to build one out of meccano on their return!
