Not having visited this part of Switzerland before we were delighted to find that the scenery and facilities were excellent. The town of Pontresina is convenient for really good mountain hikes both from the town itself and by using the cable cars, chair lifts, trains and buses which are all convenient and made all the more attractive by the fact that hotel guests receive a free card which gives unlimited access to all of these forms of transport in the locality. This must have saved us a very considerable sum over the week which we spent there.
Our room at the hotel was comfortable, very clean and of a reasonable size with a small balcony and window looking down the valley to the mountains. We had a bath with a shower over which was fine apart from a dislike of shower curtains which cling to you when wet!
All of the staff at the hotel were very friendly and spoke excellent English. Breakfast consisted of a good selection of cereals, cheese, meats, bread/croissants, jams, yoghurts and fruit and gave us a good start to the day. We opted for half board with the five course option which gave excellent value with a variety of tasty options none of which were too large so it was always possible to finish the meal without feeling overfull.
Pontresina is very quiet in the evenings, there was a market in the main street one evening and a concert in the forest another but apart from that not much to do, in common with most Swiss mountain towns. The hotel does not have a lounge for residents and this would be a very welcome addition as we enjoy playing cards and having a quiet drink, playing cards, planning the following day or listening to music and this had to be done in our bedroom.
We arrived by car and there was free parking at the front of the hotel. I believe that there is also undercover parking at the rear but that there is a fee for this.
Overall a very comfortable clean and friendly hotel in an excellent location which I do not hesitate to recomend.
