The context of our trip was a 25th wedding anniversary celebratory jaunt to the 2011 Heartland music festival (we liked a few of the acts on the 4 day program, Emiliana Torrini, Lamb Chop, John Parrish, Jim White and the name of the festival was very appropriate for the nature of our celebration) in Vevey, Switzerland.
We thought that we would splash out and treat ourselves to a good hotel, and in this regard the Hotel des Trois Couronnes did not disappoint, it was very tranquil and restful with a high quality of service and attention to detail e.g. our case was taken seamlessly during check in and was whisked to our room where it awaited our arrival.
We don't normally stay in (true) 5* hotels and aren't the wealthiest folks around and therefore we did not eat at the hotel, although to be fair, from what we could garner the menu prices were in keeping with "5 star hotel" vis a vis the prices in local restaurants. Our view is however coloured by the relative UK v Switzerland cost of living differences where we found things to be much more expensive (as a rule of thumb x 2, but there were several exceptions and we find that picnicking is always cheaper and can be more enjoyable/fun if the weather is good....which for us it was...for the 4 days we were there!!! on a fine day take a picnic up the furnicular!...) and hey ho it's a mind set and you cut your cloth and spend your hard earned shekels if you are lucky enough to have them.
The Hotel.
We were told it is the 2nd oldest 5* hotel in Switzerland and was a former palace and is certainly very grand. The whole hotel had a French elegance and had a calming, meditative, ambience. All was very well maintained and plush. All reception staff/concierges dealt with were very welcoming and helpful, initially showing us around the hotel en route to and including our room.
Our room, a junior suite, was excellent, very large and comfortable bed. The decor lent it a continental drawing room feel, elegant furniture, large windows and large white marble mantle, and it had a small balcony overlooking the old town of Vevey where we sat and drank coffee and let the views, daily minor machinations, sounds and feel of Vevey destress our UK City (Aberdeen) mind states.
The room had a part partition which served front facing as a headboard, which lent privacy to the rear where there was a dressing/clothing storage area, minibar and a nespresso coffee maker. The bathroom was off this area and, well, like everything else in the hotel, very spacious, luxurious and well appointed.
We did use the spa a couple of times (swim, jacuzzi, steam room), and it had all that we needed, was very clean and had a high quality of decor and maintenance with discreet and yet attentive service - the meditative quality of the hotel extends to the spa where it ratchets down a few more gears.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel des Trois Couronnes, the whole "package" : our 25th wedding anniversary celebration, the hotel, the festival, the town of Vevey, the lake, the Alps, the setting of the hotel, and luckily the weather, aligned to create a very memorable and enjoyable trip. We echo the sentiments of another reviewer and agree that this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in.
As a minor people watching fringe benefit, we also 'rubbed shoulders' with the Festival performers most of whom seemed to be staying at this hotel, however, we kept ourselves to ourselves, which is the way we like it.
