“We enjoyed Cochem and this lovely little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

We travelled to Cochem by rail and the location of this hotel was just perfect. It was an easy 10 minute stroll from the station with packs on our backs and was really easy to find.

We had a Double Room Category C and were checked in immediately with very friendly service. We were given lots of information about Cochem upon check in and told were all the facilities were, including the breakfast room/restaurant. Our room price included breakfast but we can't report on it as we ate out and about during our stay.

The hotel facilities were very clean and tidy especially given the historical age of the hotel We were really surprised with the standard of our room - we were expecting it to be much worse after reading negative reviews here but we were very pleased. The room was really large and had a huge bed, as well as a spare single, large wardrobe, desk, mini friedge (unusual in guesthouses in Europe) and a good sized bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

The bed was so very comfortable and we didn't have much trouble with noise - Our window opened onto Bruckenstrasse and I could hear a little of a nightclub on the first night but had no problems going to sleep with the window shut, and it was dead quiet on the second night.

We found this hotel extremely charming and perfectly located. We were without a car and loved being an easy stroll to the old town, across the bridge, to the chairlift, castle and to the train station - we hired bikes and caught the train to Bullay then rode along the gorgeous Moselle.

We would absolutely stay again.

“Over-priced. Would not recommend this unless you were getting it for 50 EUR a night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

Charming from the outside. Room was 'B' category (B for bad?). Some antique furniture but certainly not worth 115 EUR per night. We had a look at the evening menu and decided to eat there - bad (and expensive) mistake. Fish & duck both overcooked & under-seasoned. Meal for both approx 72 EUR - was worth about 40 EUR (max.) for 2. Thus final bill for one night was 191 EUR (half board & parking). I would not recommend this hotel. We stayed a second night in Trier & if doing this again I would stay 2 nights in Trier & take a day-trip to the Cochem region (v. nice region & visit to Burg Eltz). We chose Römischer Kaiser in Trier - worked out cheaper & much superior both for accommodation & food.

“Not to recommend”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

No A/C, same in all old buildings in Cochem but this is located right in the streets. Between the train and tourist area... Pretty much impossible to sleep.

Breakfast was horrible.

There must be better hotels in Cochem.

“Can't recommend”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

We stayed in two rooms at the Alte Thorschenke in June, 2010. The check in process was facilitated by long time, English speaking employee, Inge, and we and we had great expectations. Our room was large, and the bathroom very clean and roomy. but the hotel in general was a little creepy. It is at the corner of the pedestrian zone to the front and a very busy, loud and dirty street to the side. There's a great bakery right across the square and plenty of restaurants closeby. The check-out process was difficult - desk staff didn't speak ANY English, and German didn't seem to be her first language, either. Cochem is a good home base for exploring the area, but I would DEFINITELY stay on the other (quieter) side of the river next time.
