about us--we are mature and used to staying in the finer hotels around the world and generally are keen to stay at the most luxurious locations. we were traveling with our son, and selected this hotel for its central city location and its apparent "charm" and very "un-chain" like feel.
as has been said, the location is very good. we were driving, and its not easy to find! no close parking, but we pulled up into the market square next to the hotel and unloaded our bags. due to unease in navigating the streets to find the car park, they sent a quite charming waitress bar maid to drive with me to ensure I didn't make one of the often repeated wrong turns.
we were in a "large" room by the hotel's standards on the 2nd floor. I found the room small and the bath tiny. it was very clean and reasonably equipped, with nice linens but the most basic bath amenenties. it was cleaned to a high standard daily. were I to compare the room to a U.S. hotel, it would be closer to a standard Holiday Inn or perhaps a Motel 6 room. But, this hotel is more than the basic room; that is why its hard to evaluate. as has been said, the people who own and work in it are nothing short of marvelous and are sincerly keen on making your stay comfortable. whether getting us extra pillows, an ice bucket for our champagne to suggestions on where to rent bikes for a ride along the Moselle they were always ready to help without any hint of our being a burden.
the hotel is close to an old church; charming perhaps, but if 10 minutes of morning bells bothers you, beware. we were there in ideal temperatures, but I would be quite worried in the warmer days of summer as there is no air conditioning and no screens to prevent unwanted bugs from entering. everybody in the hotel was so nice and the dinner at the hotel was of very high qaulity. our meal for the 3 of us with wine/beer and some after dinner drinks came to around 180 euros. a lot, but we felt it was well worth it.
the breakfast was perfect with a very nice spread. while I might stay here again, there simply isn't enough in Cochem of interest to warrant a return trip.
we asked for a laundry close to the hotel as we needed to do a couple loads as our stay in Cochem was 1/2 way through our 2 week car trip. we were told there was no laundry, but we could give the laundry to them to do. in reviewing our bill upon check out there was no charge whatsoever! when has that ever happened; never!! while shirts were not pressed, everything was nicely done and delivered the same afternoon back to our room folded quite nicely.
once again, this hotel is more than its simple room, but it becomes necessary (in my opinion) to get past the modest accomodations, at least if you are used to more high end hotels. all and all a very fun stay here. oh, there was also no charge for parking or for the wifi. the people are great, not the warm cuddly kind (after all this is Germany), but always trying to help and very professional.
