“Fine German Quality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Our plan to go buy some good wine was literally "last-minute" and we managed to reserve the last available room in this hotel. October weekends are high-season on the Mosel. Hotel location is super-quiet on the slope of the hill opposite Cochem city. Parking available inside and outside. Dinner was included in the deal, as was breakfast of course: "Halb-Pension." This holds for most (if not all) of the guests and to maintain timeliness (and German efficiency) in the serving of dinner one is given a choice of two start times (6:30 PM and 7:00 PM). We had a choice of four main entrees. Dinner and breakfast were fine. Our room was not very large, after all it was the last one available, but clean and fine for us. The only thing missing was a luggage stand, but closet space was plenty. Bath room (shower) was sparkling clean with modern fixtures. Service throughout our stay was fine though a touch inflexible. We will definitely return to this hotel and told the proprietor so.

Room Tip: Book early to get a balcony

“cute but stodgy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

We were pleasantly surprised with the quaint and cozy atmosphere of this place. We arrived in Frankfurt on a an early morning flight and the hotel graciously allowed an early check in. If you're having dinner you have to decide at check-in what time you want to eat and your entrees (there are 2 or 3 choices).

The room was cozy with a nice big balcony and beautiful view.

Dinner was not great, very old-fashioned and stodgy. The restaurant was very quiet and there weren't many diners, even though it was a Saturday night. It kind of felt like a library. Breakfast was also very quiet, with the usual cereals, eggs, yogurt, fruit, etc.

Unfortunately, problems arose at check-out. We were not aware that check-out was a very hard 11am. Most hotels have a soft 12pm check-out where if you show up at the desk at 12:30, they don't say a peep. This place was very strict about check-out. They called our room at 11:10 to ask if we were staying another night. We told them no, but we were just checking online for hotel in Heidelberg for that evening and we would only be a few more minutes. They called again at 11:20am. At 11:30 housekeeping was knocking at the door. They began making up our room as we were on the phone to book a room for that night!

This hotel seems to be family run and is pleasant as long as you stick within their schedule. Apparently you only get a room with a view if you book dinner, which as I mentioned is nothing special. If you plan to eat elsewhere I recommend staying elsewhere as well.

Room Tip: The rooms with a view are nice but not worth the stodgy dinner you have to book to get them.

“Room was not as reserved- certainly not a 3 star hotel!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

After checking in discovered the room was a very small twin room, not a double. Bathroom was smaller than those in "nostar" hotels in Paris. Returned to checkin desk and requested the double room which was reserved. Was told that was it and they had credit card number which they would charge even if the room was refused. Request to see a standard double room was refused. Tried to contacted 3rd party booking company to complain with no sucess. Returned the keys and left hotel. Letting credit card company carry the flag...Certainly would never consider staying at this "wanabe 3 star" hotel again!

Room Tip: Best tip is don't expect much of a room and be prepared for a room that is different than what y...

“An average hotl”

We had booked this hotel after that we had reviewed some reviews on Tripadvisor and Booking.com. I have to say that the welcome was very pleasant, the lady spoke well English and explained the ins and outs of the hotel. We had booked a room with a view on the Mosel, these rooms were only possible to book with dinner. The room was good and clean (only there were no amenities in the room), but the dinner was really nothing so special. The cook used a lot of can items, no taste. The dinners were very disappointed especially when you visit the local market and what you can find there of fresh items. When you take a bottle of water to the room then this one is 3 Euro more cheaper than when you drink the same bottle during your dinner.

“Not exactly relaxing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2007

We had a lovely spacious, excruciatingly clean room with a balcony with a great shower that would empty the Mosel. Breakfasts are good with fruit yogurt and muesli as well as the usual fare. The sauna and fitness suite is great.

However there are some things that may make a stay here not as relaxing as you might hope. The best rooms only are available if you book evening meals. The meals are only available between 6-30 and 7-30. (We didn’t arrive at the station until 7 and were told we had to get a taxi so we wouldn’t miss our meal!)

The hotel is locked at 10 o’clock, (night keys were provided) The lights are switched off on the terrace and balcony at the same time. There is no bar – drinks are available before and for a while after dinner then only an ‘honesty fridge’ on the landing with a few beers and wine (and cctv!)

At breakfast there is a menu on the table listing the (two) choices for dinner. You are expected to choose your main course and the time you want to eat whilst eating breakfast.

Evening meals aren’t that great. The starters definitely were the best bits, tomato based sauces over some sort of meat seems to dominate on main courses and very small dollops of cheap ice cream featured for sweet on two nights. They aren’t huge either, I’m a very small eater so larger appetites would be disappointed.

And then there’s a very annoying ‘naf’ china clock in the dining room that very loudly whistles a tune every hour….probably so you don’t linger too long…..

It’s a reasonably good hotel, but unfortunately some aspects seem to be designed for the convenience of the family who own and run it rather than the guests. However there are lots of returning guests so the regime must suit some people. If you don’t have evening meals and want to walk down-and up again- to the village (which is a bit of a ghost town after 7o’clock) for a drink and a meal or if you like early nights it’s OK.
