Stopped over in Bernkastel for one night, travellling from Austria to the UK.
External impressions were good. Both the main hotel and the annexe across the road are well maintained and attractive. Both are within walking distance of the charming town centre and some rooms have views over the Mosel.
However, on the the inside the Baeren is a dull, old fashioned hotel. Sure it's clean and tidy, but the 1970's feel to the place is not lifted by countless teddy bear pictures and nick nacks that are scattered around.
It seemed expensive too: 140 Euro for 2 bed room with 2 children's beds.
Unusally for a small hotel, the staff lacked warmth, except the very helpful breakfast crew. This is a shame. Felt more of a stop over place than somewhere you would want to spend a long weekend.
On the plus side, the family owned Altes Brauhaus in Bernkastel was superb. Friendly, buzzy, welcoming for families, super food, wine and beer.
