I went on a 4 day school trip to Hotel Spiegel Garten, and before coming read some awful reviews. I was dreading staying there and as the coach pulled up and we saw Annie ( the hotel manager lady, referred to in the other reviews as the woman who hits you on the side) stood in the dark and dingy and poorly decorated check in, i started to think oh crap it's really gonna be dreadful. The first thing you notice in the lobby is the awful egg smell and wonky pictures of strange chinese figures and stained walls and carpet. Annie is fairly odd looking but not too scary, she actually is very pleasant and helpful even if she doesnt speak a word of English! The are lots of steps leading to the rooms and be warned if your on a school trip trying to get up them lugging a huge suitcase up followed by 30 other kids shoving and pushing it is a little dangerous. We were lucky me and my 2 other roomates because we got one of the best rooms. The dingy carpet and ripped wallpaper are disgusting but it's okay the mushrooms have been cleared! There was a double bed with stained mattresses and one single which i'm not joking looked like a hospital bed! It smelt a little so we tried to open the very nice huge big windows the best part of our room, my friend opened the latch and the window fell forward and she shouted " oh no i've broken it " Luckily thats just the way they open! So don't worry. Our view was off the town and very nice. There are many bugs especially wasps, one flew in our room on the last night. The bathroom, okay lets just say it's small, limescaley and brown and green (like the tripadvisor background) but the worst part is the seling. At first glance its seems fine with thick white metal bars across it but if you look through the holes you'll see huge gaping holes with wires dangling out of them not to mention bugs, as a joke we said that there was someone up there watching us but when you look up there it doesnt seem so unreal. Anyway as i said ours was one of the nicest rooms, the boys room was terrible stained wallpaper and dingy carpet it looked much like a hole! Food: after a 12 hour journey with only a few stops you need some food so as we sat down in the again strangley decorated restaurant with the koi fish pond next to us we were hoping for nice wholesome food. The waitresses all chineese, brought out a bowl of chicken noodle soup, it tasted like chicken pie and water the worst soup i have ever tasted or so i thought, for maincourse was watery spaghetti bolognaise and pudding shop bought ice cream. Next night was defintely THE WORST SOUP EVER! I don't know what was in it i only tested a mouthful all i can say is it was brown with raw bits of fatty bacon, for main they brought out chips ! Everyone was so pleased but along came a famous frankfurter, ewww its was fowl! The last night we had a small chicken each plonked on our plates with wierd potatoes. But this was only for school groups, adults, teachers and various otheres get to choose what they eat. If you are planning to take your family there don't! There will be screaming kids all around probably playing knock down ginger on your door and the hotel hardly has a warm family fun feel! But the other reviews do make it sound like a shack, it really isnt that bad esxpecially as most of the time your not there. Phantasialand is very fun the Micheal Jackson thriller ride is the best! We went on it 5 times, don't go on the mine ride or ghost train it's so boring, the log ride is allright and the river quest looked quite good but the que is over an hour long same for black mamba. The food is good there and the service station on route from germany to england are very nice. Make sure you bring spare euros as you have to pay to use the loo. The rhine river trip is boring and so is the castle but thats from a 13 yr olds point of view. Overall the trip is not that bad the best part is your with all your friends and we ended up going pretty hyper! In the town there is a supermarket with loads of stuff and a really nice ice cream shop, the people do tend to budge you out the way but when you sey hallo sitting out the window they love to wave. For sure you should go on the chairlift it's so cool. Have a good holiday but maybe stay in a different hotel if this is your family holiday.
