“Not convincing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

I stayed 4 nights at the Mercure Ratingen Hotel in November 2011. Rates were extremely high, due to the nearby Medica trade show in Duesseldorf. I paid 299 € per night excl. breakfast, excluding internet connection, which had to be paid extra.
The girls at the reception were extremely friendly and helpful, not only during check-in, but during the whole stay.
My room, a rather small-sized, standard, Mercure room, was on the first floor to the backside of the hotel. Consequently, it was very calm. The room itself was just standard, nothing really special to say about. You might also call it boring. Everything was functional, but not very up-to-date or even inviting. A closet was not available, just a metal bar with some hangers in a rack. The TV was old and small; a kettle with free coffee and tea amenities was available. The internet connection was working reliably and fast, but had to be paid extra.
The bathroom was well sized and clean, but needed an update.
The location of the hotel is terrible if you don’t have a car. There is no public transportation available and you have to take a taxi to get out of the hotel. A ride to Duesseldorf city centre will cost you about 40-50 €. Ratingen city centre is about 8 km away, Duesseldorf airport about 13 km. Apart from a Mc Donald’s right opposite from the hotel, there’s not much around. If you are travelling by car though, the location is not bad: near to the highways 52 and 3 and relatively near to the airport.
Overall, the hotel is not bad, but there are certainly better options at even better prices.

“Good Hotel - Quiet Area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

Nice rooms, a sort of upgraded travel lodge room. English channels on TV only news channels! Do we really need to be constantly bombarded with this crap? How about BBC1 or ITV? Evening meal was fair, price was okay.

“Where not to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2011

We stayed here enroute to Belguim from Berlin. Clearly this hotel is a conference style establishment. We arrived Friday afternoon and found that there was no dining available Friday night so we had to go out. Not necessarily what we wanted to do after a long drive. However we were fortunate to find good food close by. It was very hot and there was no aircon in the rooms which meant opening the windows therefore noisy through the night. No free wifi available. Like a number of hotels throughout Europe no minibar. Room was clean and fairly comfortable but very basic hotel.

“Good middle class hotel”

If you book this hotel you should bear in mind that you need a car to reach either Düsseldorf or Ratingen town centres. Public transport is available, however it takes quite a while to get you to the town centres, whereas you just need 15 minutes to reach Düsseldorf or even Essen by car.
To start with the pros, public areas and my room were perfectly clean and well maintained, also staff was very friendly and helpful. The parking situation is really not as bad as described in previous reviews. I used to come back to the hotel at various times between 2pm and 1 am and could always park near the ebtrance although the hotel was fully booked.

Now the cons...I was woken up at 5:30 pm by some humming noise which stayed on for hours and seemed to be coming from the hotel, not outside. Heating is not working properly, radiator was piping hot, however the room didn't get really warm. Also in the bathroom there is no heating, just a heating lamp which you can switch on for max. 15 minutes.

All in all I would stay here again, but only with earplugs and not when it's freezing outside.
