Stumbled upon this classically "medieval" European hotel - which would have been an absolute stunner but for the fact that it is on the main road (race track?) through the town! That being said - we stayed here for a birthday treat (a bit more pricey, at Euro 85 per night, than we normally paid on our trip) and it was superbly old, historical and in tip-top shape - with the odd luxury touches expected of the "Romantik" chain of hotels. Breakfasts outstanding with touches of home made preserves, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed oranje juice, wide choice of breads, and we believe the restaurant is famed (although we didn't eat dinner here). There is a seriously old history to the hotel, which has been researched and is displayed in the entrance foyer - along with authentic period furniture etc.
We chose the location as a rural location, within easy train commuting distance of Cologne (Koln) and Bonn. This allowed for relaxing travel, without the hassles of finding and paying for parking during day trips to these two cities. This was a good option, in our opinion - allowed for city-tourist site seeing during the day, and we were able to retreat into a quieter German rural area to relax and sleep - fortunately the church bell across the street stopped bonging between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am! The owner/manageress was superbly communicative in English, and even offered me a birthday gift (a locally produced clay bird pipe whistle!) when she heard it was my birthday!
