First of all, the hotel is in Hoheleye, so don't let the Winterberg in the title fool you.
We were there for the weekend, celebrating our mum's sixtieth at the end of October.
It was definitely a place I'll never forget. The hotel used to be an old hospital I think and that shows. Together with the somewhat older staff, we felt as if we'd entered another world. It was great fun watching the staff and they were very funny and helpful.
The food was just as fun. Huge pans with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes were served with huge spoonfuls, so dinners were simple, but nice. The bonus was our musician, who would entertain us with the exact same songs every night. We still sing 'Rot, rot, rot sind die Rosen' every once in a while.
We brought our dog and that was great. He wasn't allowed to be with us during dinner, but I think that's quite normal. It was wonderful to just go out in the morning and be right in the forest. We even saw a fox one morning.
The hotel isn't too far from Winterberg and there are loads of nice walkways in the neighbourhood. We took the bus to Winterberg and then walked a route that ended almost next to the hotel. Perfect.
So, if you're not too fancy and can appreciate all this I've just written, you should definitely go there and experience it for yourself!
