We just spent a weekend at Hotel Schneider in the Winterberg. Our aim was to ski and this hotel is in a great location. It is opposite a ski rental shop and about 5 minutes walk to the bottom of the slope.
It is a 3 star hotel and our room was a little dated especially the bathroom (flashback to the 70's!). However, it was very comfortable and big. We booked a room that sleeps 3 so that our little daughter of 2 years old could have her own bed.
There is no telephone in the room and they did not have any English TV channels but we came to relax and not to watch TV so it did not bother us.
The hotel staff did not speak any English... but somehow that was not a problem. They were very friendly and so accommodating. Our daughter broke a mug... and then at breakfast spilled yoghurt all over the table and they just smiled and didnt make a fuss. They did not have a huge selection for breakfast but it was more than enough choice for us. It was the pretty standard european breakfast of bread, jam, cheese with some scrambled eggs and bacon with really good strong German coffee.
We were joined by some friends and were 9 people in total staying over in 3 rooms. They put together a big table for us for breakfast so that we could eat together which I thought was very sweet of them. (they did this without us even asking so it was a lovely surprise when we came downstairs for breakfast!)
We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant and that was really good and very reasonably priced.
I will definitely be staying here again!
