My mother's family comes from Freising, and the purpose of our trip was a family funeral. Under these difficult circumstances, we wanted our trip to be as easy as possible. Staying at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof was the perfect choice, and we would recommend it to anyone visiting the area near Munich Airport. It is a family operated inn run by Mr. Dettenhofer, who was originally somewhat stiff and formal, but once he met us, he relaxed a bit and was quite nice. We decided at the last minute to abandon the idea of the outrageously-priced rental car offered to us by Hertz, and this turned out to be an extremely wise decision. Freising is a very quick taxi ride from the airport for about 21 Euros, and in this super-ancient city (founded in 725 A.D.) full of narrow alleys and cobblestone streets, a car becomes something to actually worry about. You'll be amazed at how many people opt to use bicycles, and all the stores, cafes, and tourist attractions are a really short walk from the hotel. If you really do need a car, however, the hotel does have a small parking lot in back and some covered garage spaces. It's safe to go out at night, and you get an extra key to use if you need to enter the hotel late, although it's open 24 hours. We liked our small double room with private bath and spent a lot of time there amusing ourselves with the hilarious German-dubbed programming on satellite TV. We opted to include breakfast in our room rate. We didn't discover until the moment we left for the airport that it was possible to request hot food like cooked eggs because not much English is spoken by the staff. However, we had been more than satisfied with the generous, high-quality array on the cold breakfast buffet of breads, spreads, meats, cheeses, cereals, yogurts, all delicious local products. We didn't visit the actual dining room during our stay because our jet lag made us nap during the evening hours, and we'd get up and run out to one of the four neighboring outdoor cafes just before the kitchen closed. There are *lots* of choices in the small downtown Marienplatz market square next to the hotel. If you want to bypass the usual overpriced businessman's hotels and get a true Bavarian experience at about half the price of the chains like Marriott, Novotel, etc., then check out the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. This very pleasant stay made our funeral trip a lot easier for our family, and we would gladly return under happier circumstances -- highly recommended!
