We stayed here for one night on our way home after a holiday in Europe. We chose the town because its old town looked interesting, which turned out to be the case.

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area, and we certainly had a peaceful night. This was perhaps helped by the fact that there seemed to be only 3 occupied rooms. Our triple room was a good size and suprisingly well-furnished for a 3-star hotel, including armchairs and settee, a nice wooden bureau and comfortable beds, with everything being immaculately clean. There was even a spacious balcony. Although it isn't air-conditioned, the window is huge and can be fully opened. Only the light fittings, which are at best described as old-fashioned, let it down a little.

Breakfast was not too bad but not really anything to get excited about. We didn't find the coffee as good as some other places in German-speaking countries.

Although we were greeted warmly on our arrival, and also given a friendly goodbye, at other times (we came and went a few times) there seemed to be nobody at reception or indeed any member of staff to be seen anywhere. This made the hotel seem like more of a money-making business than a place with a personal welcome.

One effect of the hotel's location is that you will have quite a walk if you're looking, for example, for a place to eat. You have around a 15-minute walk into the old town (ask for directions at reception, if you can find anyone there) down a long, narrow path and through the Botanical Gardens. It's also uphill all the way back! The "Sternwarte" restaurant is in the opposite direction (therefore downhill coming back) and it is decidedly expensive.

Our room was comfy and clean. Staff were a bit "cold", not very friendly. Hotel difficult to find, you do need a car as the hotel is 20 mins from town centre. Breakfast was ok, poor for the money we paid tho.
we only stayed one night so we did not mind the service and lack of hospitality.

This is a small well appointed hotel in a pleasant suburban area of Tubingen, at a 15 minutes downhill walk from downtown. Quite convenient if traveling by car, not so much so otherwise. The service was acceptable, although the staff was not helpful at all when asked for some information that required a phone call. We would still recommend this hotel, if it were not for the rude manner in which they refused to send to us a pair of glasses that we had forgotten in the room. When we begged them over the telephone from Freiburg to do so and charge us for the expenses, their answer was that we could pick them up at the hotel any time we wanted, but that they would not send them under any circumstances. Bear this in mind if you decide to choose this hotel.

My husband and I were looking for a moderately priced hotel where we could get some work done while visiting family in Tuebingen, and the Katharina Garni fit the bill perfectly. The superior double room we stayed in for about two weeks was large and comfortably (if not particularly elegantly) furnished, the bathroom was clean and modern; and the breakfast spread was pretty good, especially the delicious German cold cuts and rolls.

Best of all, the high-speed internet access (via a wired router) was free and pretty reliable, a major consideration for us. Note, however, that unlike most hotels with in-room ethernet, the Katharina Garni does not support Wi-Fi travel routers so for both of us to be online at the same time, I had to set up Internet connection sharing on my notebook, which is a bit complicated. Also, if you want to sit at the desk, consider bringing a 10- to 15-foot ethernet cable as the supplied one can't reach that far.

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area at least half a mile from downtown. It's family run, and the personnel was very helpful and friendly. Tourists may prefer something closer to town, especially those without a car; however if--like us--you're driving, there's ample parking, also free, which probably isn't the case in town. We'd definitely return.
