Visited Hotel Sonnenberg just after Christmas for a week’s skiing. This was a late booking, and there wasn't anywhere else to go... not much choice.
Ok, the review: It's a very nice family based hotel. it's about a 1km walk to the nearest train station, which was the easiest way to get to the ski area at the nearby Feldberg ski area with the free bus/train service. There were no drying facilities, so after a day’s boarding/skiing everything had to be dried in the room. The rooms met our needs but that’s all I can say about it. The beds were ok, but cleaned while we were at breakfast. So when we had finished breakfast we had to wait until the hotel staff had finished cleaning which took 10-15 minutes. Could they not wait until we had left the room? Breakfast – I always found something at breakfast time, but if you have children there isn’t going to be much for them unless they have a particularly well developed palate. We could not find a bar or any food in the evening so it was a 1km walk back into the village to find something to eat – this might not be exactly what you want after a day’s skiing. The swimming pool was quite nice but it was cold and really part of the health spa. The swimming pool closed at 19.00 which was a shame as it would have been good fun in the evening. During the summer it's by the terrace so it would be really nice. So, during the winter it’s not the best place to stay and it’s not really a hotel for children.
Would we go there again? No – not for skiing at least and not in the summer though the area around is really lovely. For skiing, we don’t want the 20-30 minute drive and fight for the car park at Feldberg or 90 minute trip using public transport. During the summer, it would be a nice but not with kids. I think it would be possible to find something closer to the village and little cheaper.
