I wanted a chill-out week away for my birthday and this place hit the spot on all aspects. Location was in the town centre, good food, clean/spacious rooms, friendly / helpful staff at an unbelievable price. I could not get a decent B&B in Britain for the cost of this hotel. The amenities were just enough but not too much to be over the top and just enough to do in the region to fill a week at a relaxed pace. One last point they serve the local Hasserödebeer which is a must.

After a couple of nights in Berlin, Wernigerode soothed all my ruffled feathers and the Gothisches Haus was the icing on a very beguiling cake.

On all of our three nights we opted to dine in one or other of the wondrous selection of cafés and restaurants around the market square - not due to any deficiency on the part of the Gothisches Haus - but our nights and our mornings were spent in the most delicious warmth (atmosphere rather than temperature - it was August!) and comfort.

Particular praise must go to the breakfast, a buffet of such pristine magnificence that we contemplated staying a month in order to do justice to it. It's served in a lovely part of the building complex where old meets new in a temple-like atrium, with the spread of foodstuffs laid out in an apsidal sanctuary reminiscent of a monastic chapel!

The price for this paragon of a hotel was more than reasonable - I wonder if prices in the former GDR are still a little below par? Or maybe it's because this is a bit of a backwater? If so, long may it remain so. The Harz mountains are lovely... but don't go for the weather.

Positive : The hotel is uniquely situated in the middle of the historical town center of Wernigerode, it cannot get any better than this. The staff is efficient, and friendly. Very comfortable rooms. Wernigerode and the surroundings (Harz mountains) are magnificent for nature lovers and lovers of historical buildings. Loved our stay.

Negative : Our rooms were situated facing the Town hall. Splendid view but forget about sleeping late. Noisy passers-by will keep you out of your sleep. Delivery, maintenance, garbage and street cleaning trucks are doing their thing from 6 AM onwards and the Town Hall bells activate at 7 AM and chime every 15 minutes! If you want quiet, insist for a room at the back.

Stayed here for a night on business. Staff were polite and friendly. Room was spotless with bathrobe, slippers, spa shampoo / shower gel and loved the great extra touches like chocolates on the pillow! There was a good selection of food for breakfast. When I came to check out and someone had tried to charge a meal to my room, it was instantly removed from my bill without question. Location was perfect for visiting the town, very close to local bars and resturants. Would recommend for business or pleasure.
