This hotel was a perfect base as we explored the area by narrow-gauge railway and bus (the latter using the free visitors' pass provided at check-in, encouraging us to travel well beyond Wernigerode with the locals). Our room to the rear was extremely comfortable, and quiet on evenings when the square was busy. The location can't be beaten...and nor can the quite superb breakfast buffet, where you are utterly spoilt for choice and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we wanted to sit outside when possible, and there are so many eateries within a stone's throw.
Wernigerode is just charming, and so are the surrounding towns, easily accessible by local bus. Outside the hotel, not much English is spoken, so you really need to know a few key phrases in German if you want to know what you're ordering or to ask for help planning your route on the railways. It's easily possible to do the entire Harz narrow gauge circuit in a day if you don't mind catching the early bus to Quedlinburg, and well worth the effort. And if you're a steam fanatic, travel to Wernigerode by mainline train...as you pull into the station there are bound to be at least a couple of steaming locos right next to the platform to swoon over!
