“A great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2009

I had booked into this hotel before reading the previous review. When I did see the previous comment I wondered what I was about to let myself in for!! However, after four nights in the Goldener Hirsch with some friends I can only think that the views of the last contributor must have been referring to a different hotel.

I found the hotel to be clean, comfortabie and run by a great staff under the leadership of Eckhart. They were curteous, helpful and had a great sense of humour.

The location is superb for access to all the attractions and services at Friedrichshafen

I would recommend this hotel without reservation.

“Hotel Goldener Hirsch - bad choice...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2008

I recently spent 2 nights at this hotel with my wife. We were part of a 20 person group attending a trade fair at the local Friedrichshafen Messe. Unfortunately our experience there were a great deal worse than those reported in the other reviews here.
It began when we checked in - the owner was MOST unfriendly and we felt particularly unwelcome. The room was small and very basic, but it was at least clean. And we gained a lot of amusement reading the hotel and other local info provided - the English version being very similar to some I have found in China.
When we gathered with the rest of our group in the restaurant later that evening, the service provided by the waitress was less than acceptable - she was aggressive, rude, loud, and overall gave us the feeling we had somehow become part of a German Fawlty Towers production. And the standard of the meals was very poor. What was advertised in the menu as a local specialty (and NOT inexpensive!) was dry, overcooked, and the chips smelt strongly of old fat. We were unable to eat our meals.
Returning to our room around midnight we discovered that the heating had been turned-off some time before and the room temperature unacceptably cold.
Breakfast next morning was a simple buffet selection typical for Germany. However, some of the pates and the fruit juice had gone completely off. When guests at a neighbouring table complained to the owner about this he advised that this can happen when there has been thunder during the night (There hadn't been...) but made no attempt to have the "off" items removed from the buffet.
We returned late from the trade fair (Around 12PM) to discover our room had not been serviced. We were the only ones of our group to have this. However others, although their room had been serviced, had no towels. The owner did apologise for this in the morning.
All in all this was a hotel experience from Hell, and there is NO WAY I could recommend it at any price.

“Good Budget Choice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2006

The owner speaks good English and is very hospitable as is his two dogs and the other staff members. The rooms are clean with Pine furniture; they are not large, quite basic, but perfectly adequate. The beds are firm, pillows thin, but clean and once again adequate. The rooms have a small TV. The bathrooms generally have a shower, with glass doors, which works quite well although the pressure will not knock you over. There is heating but no air-con.

Continental breakfast is included in the bargain price and is very good. The restaurant also serves very good food of an evening (steak, Fish, Goulash) at a very reasonable price. There is also a bar. The Zeppelin Museum, School Museum shops and lake front are only 10-15 minutes walk away. (Why not splash out and take a Zeppelin flight while you are there, these are pre-bookable on-line).

The Hotel is Not outstanding as such, but as a budget choice it is excellent value for money. I’ve given it four starts not because it is a ‘four star’ hotel, but it is very good for those that essentially want a B&B. It is probably better than most UK hotels at that price if you can find any.

Combine this Hotel with a Ryanair flight from Stanstead for a cheap weekend away!

We booked two rooms, one for myself and my partner and the other for my ageing parents. The hotel was very clean and friendly. Rooms were small but very nice and the bathrooms recently refurbished. The brakfast buffet had excellent variety.
