From the moment we arrived until after we checked out we were treated wonderfully. We were greeted by the hotel manager and Curry (the house dachshund). I inquired about the size of the room and was asked to see it. The manager promised that if it was not acceptable, she was willing to give us a different room. However, there was no desire to change rooms. The room (number 22) was a large (even by US standards) tower room. The bathroom was small, but operated efficiently. The entire hotel was thoroughly cleaned each day and we saw no dust.
When we arrived in our room there was a chilled bottle of sparkling wine waiting for us (a gift from the manager) along with complimentary sparkling waters. The complimentary goodies did not end there. One rainy day we returned to our made up room and were treated to a gift certificate to a lovely cafe in a neighboring village to make up for the dreary day.
Breakfast was a buffet, but you were served your drinks. The staff seated us the first day and asked once what we wanted to drink and it was provided each day without asking.
The buffet selections were large and continuously restocked. The quality of the food is far superior to the free breakfasts in similarly priced US hotels. In addition the manager was in attendance seating guests, filling and refilling drinks and managing the front desk all at the same time.
The hotel is small and we felt as if we were staying with good friends or family. It was and is definitely a WOW feeling. We were greeted by name by the hotel staff every time they saw us. I do not know how they make any money as the room rates were very reasonable.
There are two downsides with one additional downside for Americans. The hotel parking lot only holds 4 cars, so often times one has to park on the street or riverfront. This was a 3 star hotel. In Europe that means there is no one on the front desk 24 hours a day. We were advised to take our key as it was also a key to the front door of the hotel which was locked at 6:00 pm. If you arrive later than that you must speak to the restaurant staff (not a part of the hotel) or the more expensive 4 star sister hotel a couple of blocks away. This was not a problem for us, but I could see it being problematic for late arrivals. Small European hotels also do not provide washcloths. If you or your companion needs them, you will need to pack them. (It is an American thing, I guess.)
Despite the above, Traben-Trarbach is in a lovely part of Germany and the Trabener Hof Hotel is definitely a wonderful place to stay with great people caring for you. The hotel staff clearly went out of its way for us and that is why we sent the staff flowers upon our departure. I highly recommend the hotel to anyone.
