With two other cyclists - all in our 60s - I spent three nights at The Moseltor as part of an Activity Breaks package. The hotel arranged for bike rental from a nearby shop and the bikes were of superb quality with 18 gears. The quality of the off-road cycle paths along the Moselle (Mosel in German) is so good that you rarely have to venture out of top gear. It really is that easy.
The Moseltor is a 3-star hotel situated by the river on the Trabach side of the art nouveau town of Traben-Trarbach. The en-suite rooms were extremely comfortable and included shower, wc, hairdryer, television and safe.
The real bonus is the gourmet meal served each night by mine host, Georg Bauer, who used to be the chef at a 5 star hotel near London Heathrow Airport. He certainly knows how to cater for every palate with the finest German delicacies, all supplemented with a glass or two of the local Riesling wine.
The meals are served by his sister, Inge, with typical German efficiency. Her disciplined and rather stern mien as she strides the dining room belies a caring and helpful nature with any enquiries you may have.
Ryanair fly to Frankfurt-Hahn three times a day and the airport is a mere 20 minute taxi ride to Traben-Trarbach.
This is a good hotel at which to base yourself if you intend exploring the Moselle by cycle or boat. It comes highly recommended.
