Badenweiler, Germany
Hotel Schwarzmatt
The Schwarzmatt is conveniently located close to the centre of this quiet and restful spa resort, charmingly situated in the southern part of the Black Forest. It is a member of the Relais & Chateaux group. There is a new spa in the town and a lovely park, plus plenty of small cafes and restaurants.
Our room was spacious and luxuriously appointed. The staff were friendly and helpful, and standards of service and housekeeping excellent.
Superb extensive breakfast buffet, with hot dishes freshly prepared to order.
Tea/coffee/cocktails served in the comfortable lounge/bar in the afternoon with extensive range of delicious patisserie and icecream concoctions available (very popular with both residents and locals). Restaurant is first class with extensive well balanced range of menus and a la carte dishes.
Excellent indoor swimming pool and sauna facilities, with delightful rest lounge, overlooking the garden, attached. The weather was bad during our stay, so the heated floor was appreciated. Beautician can be booked through reception. Treatments (packages available) given in spacious private, but windowed salon on lower floor.
The Schwarzmatt is well up to the usual Relais et Chateaux standard. It is not cheap ( we paid 300 Euros B&B), but if you are looking for a small, friendly luxury hotel with spa facilities, you will find it difficult to find anything better. As is usually the case with German luxury hotels, the atmosphere and clientele are rather middle aged. Families with young children might not find this hotel ideal.
