“We thought it was fine!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2007

I stayed at the Inn at Big White for 9 days with my partner and 13 year old son - it was our first time in a Canadian ski resort and we thought it was fine, especially compared to what the same money would buy in a European resort. It was the last week of the skiing season, so things were winding down a bit, and the cleaning of the rooms was,as other people have found, a bit haphazard. However a quick request to the people in reception always got things sorted out, and we didnt have the sort of serious dirt problems mentioned by other reviewers

The hot tub was open but the jets weren't working, this however didnt seem to me to be much of a problem , as I thought the outdoor pool was fantastic and swam in it every day.

We ate in the restaurant a couple of times - it was OK but there are better places eg we liked the bistro at the deli.

There isnt really any sort of social space downstairs apart from the restaurant, so there isnt anywhere other than the restaurant to hang out with other people who are staying there - our teenager in particular would have liked somewhere like a games room or something. We went to Happy Valley quite a lot for this sort of thing, but somewhere downstairs would have been better. I noticed that the Crystal Inn had something like this, also quite a few of the condo complexes.I would consider one of the condos if I was going again - some of them look very nice, and most of them have hot tubs on their balconies.

The ski in and out worked pretty well - the snow was melting so skis had to be removed to get across a road ,otherwise it is just minutes from the slopes.

All in all, it was perfectly fine - and the swimming pool was a really big bonus for me!

  • Liked — The swimming pool
  • Disliked — The lack of social space downstairs

“worst stay in a Canadian Hotel”

We are just back from skiing in Big White. The Inn at big white was a hugh dissapointment. This is the 6th time we have been to Cananda and we were were surprised to find such poor service. The hotel is run by young Austalians on a "year out" and on minimum wage. They are all very friendly but there did not appear to be any management at all. The breakfat buffet and evening meals were good, the reception staff were helpful but the big surprise was the poor housekeeping. The room was not cleaned properly, one day was not cleaned at all, the waste bin was not emptied on a number of occasions, the bathroom floor had bits on it all week, the bath was not cleaned, the floor not nice to walk on in bare feet and when checking below the bed for any missing things I wished I hadn't! Food debis and old dirty ear plugs festering there! Only one of the 5 ceiling lights worked (2 days to replace bulbs) and the hot tub was out of order for 3 days and the changing room a mess. If Big White management do wish to encourage more europeans to stay they will have to raise their standards.
We had 1 week at Lake Louise Inn after Big White and (despite the room being $11 CD per night cheaper) the standards were far superior.

We spent a few days skiing at Big White during December and stayed at the Inn at Big White. The staff we very helpful and courteous. The hot tub and pool were at the perfect temperature. The room was very clean and cozy with the corner fireplace. The general common areas of the hotel were well kept and clean. Very nice place and would highly recommend it!

“Great Place”

My wife and I just returned from a weekend at Big White. We stayed at the Inn at Big White and were impressed. The rooms were nice and clean, the restaurant was good and the service was great.

Upon arriving, we checked in at the front desk, and were given our keys and told where to park. By the time we arrived in the underground parking lot there was a porter waiting for us (Australian of course) and he brought our luggage up to the room - we were impressed.

The restaurant and lounge were very good. Apparently it was terrible last year, so the resort took over operations this year. The restaurant is now called "Carvers" and is very popular - They have high end dishes, but also a "hamburger buffet" for those of us who aren't big spenders. There is also a lounge which was a nice place to have a late evening drink and appy.

The access to the ski run is either out the front and across the road to the beginning of the "Hummingbird" run, or out the back and onto a well used trail (not an actual run) that leads to the hummingbird run. You can actually ski/board the trail, it's a slight decline so you don't have to "pole", but you won't get much speed.

Overall, it was a nice clean place to stay, and the price was right.

P.S. there were some earlier postings about the hot tub not working, it was working fine for our stay.

“No complaints . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2006

Before heading out to Big White at the end of January I checked out the negative reviews of the Inn at Big White on Trip Advisor, and was left wondering if I had made the best choice of the three full-service hotels on the mountain.

Luckily, my experience in no way resembled anything remotely negative and I felt compelled to type this up in order to bring some balance to the reviews.

Our room on the third floor overlooking the mountain was spacious and clean. Despite not having a hot-plate, the kitchenette was well-equipped and had everything we needed. The bathroom was large and my partner made good use of the conveniently located clothes line, which pulled out from the wall and ran parallel to the shower rod – perfect for hanging our wet bathers.

We were both impressed with the Inn at Big White’s facilities. There are ice machines on each floor, which worked out really well for our après G&Ts. The hot tub fits about 12 adults and has relatively strong jets to work those aching back muscles after a hard day on the hill. It’s also the only hotel on the mountain with a heated outdoor pool. There is a large equipment locker to store your gear as well as a reasonably sized fitness centre.

The hotel purports to be ski in/out, but it’s really a brief walk to the slopes – a street crossing is involved. It looks like the best ski in/out hotel is the White Crystal Inn, which, incidentally, has a great restaurant – The Copper Kettle.

We didn’t eat in the hotel restaurant, Carvers, but it looked alright – don’t let the other review scare you off, it seemed to be a decent restaurant offering standard fare.

The front desk staff was friendly and able to answer any queries we had. Our room was cleaned daily. One day we returned from riding and found a note stating that since ‘items of a personal nature were left on the bed’ our sheets would not be changed. The items were a few t-shirts. A word of advice: clear your bed of everything and you’ll be fine.

Overall our experience was positive and we would return to the Inn at Big White. Big White Resort has plenty of condo and vacation home options catering more to the independent traveler interested in primarily skiing and snowboarding.

Of the 3 full-service hotels, the Inn at Big White is the least expensive. Though with rates averaging $180 a night it isn’t by any means cheap (this is a ski mountain, after all). Budget travelers should consider staying in Kelowna, a 40-minute drive from the hill where there are countless hotels in ‘low’ season during the winter.
