We are a couple who spent a long ski weekend at this hotel during mid Dec 2011.
It is a well positioned hotel for skiing, with very practical, spacious and clean rooms, but not luxurious.
For a 3 star hotel, the Mercure is good.
It has very functional and spacious rooms for a couple on a 1-2 week skiing break:
-Large entrance area between two separate doors means that little noise is heard from the corridors.
-Plenty of storage space in entrance area (hangars etc...) and plenty of draws in the room
-Flat screen TV with only French language channels
-Bathroom has bath/shower and washbasin and a electric drying rack that could be used for wet ski gear
-Separate toilet room accessed from the entrance area
-Decent sized comfortable bed (by European but not North American standards)
-Separate sofa bed
-Bath/shower are clean and functional, but nothing special and quite dated
I was nice that the room windows opened, it is nice to get a bit of mountain air into the room.
On the ski level floor, there is a ski/boot storage room with enough separate lockers for each room in the hotel.The ski room exit is a few steps from the slopes (it would be fair to call it ski-in ski-out).
Breakfast was included in our plan (most seem to). It was typical breakfast of the French Accor branded hotels. Some hot food (scrambled eggs, bacon sausages) and the usual pastries, cereals, fruit salad, orange/grapefruit segments, baguette, bread cheese and cold meats. The food was of an reasonable standard. The sort of food you might get from the local supermarket. Nothing special, but does the job to fuel you up for a day in the mountains.
The breakfast service is typically odd in that each place setting has a tray with the cutlery, china and plate set out. The waiting staff/ attendants only clear your used plates, cups etc... when you have finished breakfast completely, so your used crockery remains on the table. This seems like something that could be improved very easily. Every day the layout of the breakfast was completely different. Very odd, but not a major issue!
The hotel is very clean but it was built some time ago and could do with a facelift. Small things could be improved very easily, like improving the general appearance of the common areas such as ensuring that notices for events and deals are not scruffily presented in the common areas. All it takes are a few A4 frames.
The hotel bar is pleasant but nothing special. During the day I expect it has good views of the slopes and mountains.
There is a small games area with a pool table near the lobby and bar.
When we arrived at 2am, there was no food available anywhere in the hotel. I suppose this is expected from a 3 star hotel, but it would have been nice for them to have something snacky for guests arriving on evening flights into Geneva like us.
All of the staff were very friendly and helpful, we could not fault anything in that regard.
All in all this is a predictably decent standard ski hotel from a reliable brand. We did get a very good early season pre-paid deal by booking at least 4 months ahead. I know the prices are usually much greater for the main season. I expect there is better value to be had in Val Thorens, especially in high season, if you are prepared to do a bit of research and take a risk on somewhere else.
That said, it was an easy choice for a weekend break without having to do a lot of research into other deals reviews etc...
