“charming staff, fabulous food”

It is a testimony to the Fitzroy that despite poor weather and limited skiing we still had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in Val Thorens. The staff were charming, friendly and helpful across the board. From the restaurant and front of house staff to those working in cleaning and maintenance, it really felt that everyone wanted you to enjoy your stay. Indeed, the staff were key to creating a sophisticated yet warm and relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel. The food was delicious and I looked forward to dinner each evening with a gusto that I have not previously experienced in French alpine hotels. Although the majority of the wine list was rather expensive, I felt there was a good choice in the 35-50 euro bracket and the sommelier had an excellent personable manner - helpful without seeming at all intimidating or patronising. The room was very comfortable, although a little smaller than I may have expected. My only small gripes were that there was no bath, only a shower, and there was a knack to taking a shower without soaking the whole bathroom. The swimming pool and steam room/ sauna did a good job of easing the muscles after a days skiing though and I'm sure some rooms had baths so you could ask when booking. Also the room was fairly hot at night which necessitated opening the balcony door and it could be a bit noisy outside at times with people walking past, but nothing that interrupted sleep. However, these were minor issues and really did not detract from an excellent hotel that is made by its extremely hospitable staff. We will certainly be back.

Room Tip: ask if you want a bath

“Great service, Comfortable rooms, Noisy Partying”

We were two families (11people) and were very well looked after. Food was excellent (except for 1 night where chicken was served underdone, very visible and should never have left the kitchen as it was served sliced). The staff were all very helpful, some a little less experienced in the restaurant but i'm not the type to slate young, green, hardworking employees. I agree the wine was too expensive and some bottles ordered were not the correct vintage so they went back but the sommelier couldn't have been more helpful...
The bar area was very comfortable and the staff there were very efficient, serving snacks with every round of drinks without fail.
I wouldn't call the hotel luxurious as the rooms were quite basic but the beds comfortable and the bathrooms small but well equipped.
Noisy partygoers were a nuisance in the very early hours.
With hindsight we could have booked later than we did and probably got a better deal (which may have covered the drinks bill) but as we paid full price it turned out very expensive for the 6 night break we had.
Do I regret it? No... the staff were lovely and we had a memorable holiday. We were well looked after but we did spend a lot in the Bar and at Dinner with wine and other drinks for the children. Would have scored the FitzRoy "Very Good" if it was better value for money.

Room Tip: Possibly a back room overlooking the main entrance as the noisy partygoers spill out near the bars a...

“Great Location, even better service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

I've just returned from a long weekend in Val Thorens and I have to say that without doubt it was the hotel that really made the holiday for us.

The staff were exemplary, from the lady that managed breakfast, the reception staff, the bar staff, the sommelier and the waiting staff at dinner all made a real effort to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. They had obviously been very well trained, but you could tell they enjoyed their job, and no matter what nationality the visitors, they made time to talk to them.

We stayed half board and the four course dinner every night was exceptional. I noted some comments on the wine list on this website before i left. I thought it was pricy, but we manged to drink a very good red burgundy for 33 Euros a bottle, every night. I would have loved to sampled some of the other wines on the extensive list, but they'd have been wasted on my teenage sons.

The room was large and comfortable - although I do always struggle to sleep well at altitude, that was no fault of the room.

So what would I improve? These are really just little niggles, but the ski room was a little small when everyone was in there at the start of the day, the swimming pool was on the nippy side (28 degrees) and having the sauna/steam room in the same area as the swim pool would have been better - but only just. So the answer is not much. The hotel and it's staff were great.

Fitzroy is right in the centre of town which is great for you to be able to ski in/ski out and explore the vast range of skiing that Val Thorens has to offer. This superb location does come at a price. VT is fast becoming a real late night party resort - especially with students - due to large number of cheap accommodation available. If you are a light sleeper, you may well hear some rowdiness as people make their way home from the many clubs and bars. This didn't bother me at all, but I guess some people would take offence.

So that's it. A truly great hotel that is made great by its staff. they really were a delight and the manager - who was very visible was completely charming too.

Room Tip: I booked through a booking website and saved 70% off their published rates on their website. Still n...

“Great hotel at the great place”

This is most famous and luxurious hotel of Val Thorens, located in the center of the city, very convinient for everything- shopping, skiing, clubbing etc. It has a swimming pool, sauna and hammam. Breakfast and dinner at the restaurant we found just outstanding. If you need some ski equipment- they will bring it to you, and you start just from hotels door. Outstanding. But not cheap))

“Beautiful and luxurious”

This hotel was a perfect for my introduction to skiing. Ideally situated for ski in/out with excellent facilities including large lockers and boot drying rack. There is a beautiful spa and pool to help you wind down and also a gym for those who still have energy to spend! The staff spoke impeccable English and were incredibly helpful and welcoming. However the best thing about this hotel was the food. Breakfast was an endless and varied spread but dinner was even better with a 3 course meal every evening! Each dish was delicious, beautifully presented and at times edgy. We ate until we couldn't move every evening and looked forward to the next evening's menu. Overall we had an amazing time an would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
