It is a testimony to the Fitzroy that despite poor weather and limited skiing we still had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in Val Thorens. The staff were charming, friendly and helpful across the board. From the restaurant and front of house staff to those working in cleaning and maintenance, it really felt that everyone wanted you to enjoy your stay. Indeed, the staff were key to creating a sophisticated yet warm and relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel. The food was delicious and I looked forward to dinner each evening with a gusto that I have not previously experienced in French alpine hotels. Although the majority of the wine list was rather expensive, I felt there was a good choice in the 35-50 euro bracket and the sommelier had an excellent personable manner - helpful without seeming at all intimidating or patronising. The room was very comfortable, although a little smaller than I may have expected. My only small gripes were that there was no bath, only a shower, and there was a knack to taking a shower without soaking the whole bathroom. The swimming pool and steam room/ sauna did a good job of easing the muscles after a days skiing though and I'm sure some rooms had baths so you could ask when booking. Also the room was fairly hot at night which necessitated opening the balcony door and it could be a bit noisy outside at times with people walking past, but nothing that interrupted sleep. However, these were minor issues and really did not detract from an excellent hotel that is made by its extremely hospitable staff. We will certainly be back.
