“Hotel is no 3-star, but if the price is right, the beach makes it worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

My two small children and I stayed for two nights at the beginning of September. We paid 325EUR for two nights in an ocean-view room, and the rate included a buffet breakfast. This was about the cost of ONE night at many of the other oceanfront hotels I was considering. There's a reason for that...

Cavaliere sur Plage was the 4th hotel of our vacation, and 2 of the other 3 had also been rated 3 stars (the other was a 4-star). To say that Cavaliere sur Plage wasn't even close to the same standard as the other 3-stars is a huge understatement. An earlier reviewer called it a "motel," and other than it not being in motel fashion with the rooms accessed on the outside of the structure, it is a pretty apt description. Do not expect a three-star room. (And do not expect a mini-bar as there isn't one nor is there the possibility of a small refrigerator in your room, although the hotel staff was very kind and put the milk i had bought for my son in the fridge in the bar area.) On the whole, i found the staff very courteous and accommodating, and contrary to other reviews, we did not have to hop-scotch over dirty laundry to get to our room. Our room was clean, just a bit run-down.

The breakfast buffet is certainly plentiful but it's mediocre. Unlike other breakfasts we experienced, the jams were in little individual tins and it seemed like cafeteria-style and quality food. We did not eat in the restaurant for any other meal. We had a nice pizza meal at the beachside pizza place three doors down.

The part that I think probably makes it worthwhile is the beach. The hotel is located directly on a really fantastic beach, and our room had a fantastic view. We had a room on the -1 level, so we had a terrace from which you could jump down from the sea wall (or walk over to the stairs) and be on the beach in ten steps. The beach itself is pretty long and not all that wide, but wide enough for a couple of rows of chaise lounges (not included with your room -- i think they were about 10 EUR a piece for the day) and still plenty of room to accommodate children playing in the sand and people walking the beach. The ocean was like a lake the first day we were there and was choppier the second day.
The Grand Hotel Moriaz next door seemed nicer. the chaise lounges there had nice-looking towels on them. We were not given towels either day, although when I asked about towels, I was given a couple the second day. The Grand Hotel Moriaz, however, does not have a pool, and my children love the pool. If I had to choose again, I'm not sure what choice I would make. Because the ocean was so calm, my children barely set foot in the pool (also note that it is an indoor pool), so not sure that is a good reason to choose Cavaliere Sur Plage over its next door neighbor. For the price I paid, however, it's hard to argue about value. The room was Howard Johnson-esque, but we were barely in it and the views of the ocean and the accessibility of the beach were fantastic. If you get a good price, it's probably worth it (and so I am going to recommend the hotel since I have to pick yes or no), but I wouldn't go back if the price was higher.

Oh, and the little town is super cute with a boulangerie, a grocery store and a couple of restaurants in addition to a large public beach with lots of beach gear for sale and water activities available.

“Beach great MOTEL not so great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2010

Ok, it's a MOTEL... but on the beach and a beautiful beach it is!!! Beach get's 5, but the motel get's a 3... service was ok, and food at the restaurant was actually pretty darn good.. Frankly best hamburgers we've EVER had! Our room $300e was facing the beach and we slept with our beach front doors open which was great falling asleep to the sound of the waves... loved it... Room was frankly poor but we weren't there for the room we went for the beach! and we didn't have to park, walk fight for a spot! That's the beauty of this place...

“This is a really nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2010

Having read some negative reviews I was a little concerned but decided to give it a go.No need to have worried. Breakfast is perfectly adequate with Cereal's Bacon Scrambled Egg Toast Orange Juice Tea and Coffee available. Parking is available free across the road . The Supermarket 50 mtrs away sells English Newspapers and everything you may need and a Deli next door to the Supermarket sells fresh Bagettues & Quiches for an inexpensive lunch/snack. The hotel is typical of a French 3 star in its decor but the staff were very helpful throughout . Our room was clean and cleaned Daily with fresh towels. The balcony view of the bay is terrific. Expect to pay 12 Euro's for each Sunbed but the beach is a great feature of this hotel. An indoor swimming pool adds to the amenities. Would definitely return and only negative was an English guy who demanded to change his room as the one he was allotted had an odour. However we experienced nothing like this in our 2nd floor room.

“Great Hotel for it's value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2010

Excellent location in quiet little town. Twenty steps to the water! Huge rooms! Bathroom is divided into water closet and bathtub and sink, great for groups of four. Wonderful balcony view, patio furniture is a little wobbly but it does the trick! Breakfast buffet is by far the largest and most comprehensive we had in any of the hotels we stayed and we stayed at more than five. American style breakfast and still great breads, biscuits and of course croissants. The breakfast room is by the beach, with options to sit outside or inside. Great pizza place a few doors down. In off season we payed e$u50!!! Couldn't beat this bargain anywhere else.

“We enjoyed it”

We knew from TripAdvisor that it would be a tired hotel, so we were prepared, and enjoyed the beach and balcony. Every room on the 1st floor and above has a great view and deck. Parking and Internet were free, and A/C worked. Our room was clean enough. When you first walk down the hall to your room, you will be shocked at how run down it is, we had to play hop scotch with laundry thrown on the floor of the hall. Still on balance we liked it, and would go back.
