“Incredibly disappointing!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2011

After holidaying in Aiguebelle for many years, we decided to try Les Roches. The hotel is located on the rocks over looking the sea, very beautiful. However, it is not 4 star by any means! A very low 3 at the most. One evening we returned from dinner to find the cleaner had left her wet dirty cloth on top of my dry clean only dress on the bed, no apologies from anyone. The rooms were very basic and tired. The restaurant manager was constantly very rude, we got the impression he didn't like the English, the food made up for his bad attitude. However, the pool attendant was lovely. I was interested to see that other English speaking couples had also left complaints in the guest book. We spent £2500 there in 5 days and bitterly regret it. They are going through a renovation at present, perhaps they should also renovate the staff too!

Room Tip: Go to another hotel!

“The worst hotel we've stayed in!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

We visit France every year and are very aware of what a 4 star quality hotel is in this country. Do not be fooled by the pretty pictures on the website, this hotel is not 4 stars, personally I think 3 stars is still a push.

The staff were extremely rude. The rooms unclean, tatty and tired. The shower head was hanging off the wall, the mirror in the bathroom was so old it was tarnished around the edges, the sealant in the bath had come away. The bedroom decor was so basic.

The fridge in our room didn't work which wouldn't normally be an issue if it weren't for the fact that we needed somewhere to store our babies formula milk. When we informed the reception desk we were greated with a 'well we don't have any technicians you can keep your milk in the fridge in reception'. The towels smelt of cigarette smoke.

The hotel does have a Michelin star restaurant but this is franchised not the hotels.

The beach club is a joke, on the edge of the rocks with concerete painted white to look like sand. The pool was dirty and there was various damage around the edge to the decking.

All in all had to be the worst hotel we've ever stayed in in the south of france (the views are the only positive) so much so that we moved out after just one night to stay in a hotel close by.

“Good location but could do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

This hotel has a great location and could be wonderful if it just sorted out its facilities.
For example the pool steps were still broken (see a previous review). The sealant round our bath needed repairing. The water didn't run out of the bath properly. Wood decking was missing from around the pool and the area around the pool was scruffy.
Breakfast is expensive at 24euros per person.
I ordered a Cognac and was not asked what type I wanted. On the bill I found it was a Hennessy XO and was charged 28euros. I think that is probably a record price for one measure of Cognac.
If you want a simple salad or Club Sandwich for lunch you are out of luck there is nothing as simple as that on the menu.We ended up buying our own picnic and having that on our room balcony which was very pleasant.
Finally on our last day a wind was blowing at breakfast and a huge 12 foot wide parasol flew into the air and landed very close to some guests. The weight of it was such that it could have killed someone. This needn't have happened if the parasol had been properly secured to the deck but screw securing device was rusted and didn't work. The staff looked on in amazement but no apologies were given, just the usual French shrug!
The hotel could be so good if the would just try to sort out the little items and do some proper maintenance. Instead one is left with the feeling that all the owner cares about is maximising his income and saving money on things that matter.

“Lovely setting - not 4 star quality or service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

Good points -
Fabulous setting, friendly and helpful reception staff, Cedric (should be employee of the year as he is so courteous and helpful) who looks after you at the pool, one of the bar staff, restaurant entrees and main courses. The reduction in cost for complaining about the noise from the wedding and the maid.

Bad points -
The impression of some of the staff that guests are an inconvenience that are tolerated, there is little customer service maybe a training programme is needed?
Rooms that look clean but then you notice, mould spots on the curtains, cobwebs, rust stains, very hard towels.
Don't have a room below the restaurant especially if there is a wedding on! Not being able to book restaurant for first 2 nights as fully booked?! and wedding.
No "Do not disturb" sign for room doors so woken 3 days by room maid. On one occasion our teenage daughter was asked to get up out of bed so the maid could make her bed!
Restaurant staff who place a tray of green liquid and croutons with 2 pots of mashed up stuff on your table and do not tell you what it is and are so unhelpful when asked to explain what we are eating.
Cost of breakfast, we had it one day and it was Ok but not worth 24€
Cost of hotel taxi to St Clair and back was 30€ (cost from Le Lavandou in private taxi was 10€)
Lack of local tourist information e.g. the little train, restaurants, buses (not all of us have maseratis or equivalent) and want to experience the local culture.
The overall expererience is one of a hotel that may have in the past been 4 star but now due to the decor and the staff, leaves you wondering what you paid all that money for, other than the setting. Worth the money? No way.
One for the TV show The Hotel Inspector.

“Doesn't Live Up to Four Stars”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

First I will say that this is a magnificent location. There's not much to hate being right on the Med, with the waves literally lapping at the rocks right off of our terrace. It's the ideal location for a relaxing few days. However, the hotel doesn't come close to living up to 4 stars!! I spent four days with my husband and parents (who are both 71 and in good health). There are far too many stairs and stone steps for an older person to manuevuer -- no elevator at all! On the final morning, my mother fell and hit her head against the building. That said, it's really the service that kills this place. The staff in the restaurant is downright nasty -- my husband is French and I'm fluent -- so you can't write that off to us being "foreigners." one of the waiters, rather than clear the only table in the full breakfast room actually asked my mother if there wasn't someplace else she could sit. The food was delicious and well-prepared -- but the Beach Club menu was a tad formal -- if everyone was ordering salads and lighter fare it might be a hint to the chef to create more casual alternatives. The one pool ladder was broken and made it difficult to exit -- there was no other way out. Thankfully, Cedric, the one person responsible for EVERYTHING at pool level (greeting water taxis, drinks and lunch on the chaises) was terrific. The rooms are furnished by Ikea -- and the smashed mosquito on the wall and stain from another one didn't endgender confidence that the room is cleaned often. The HUGE gap between Les ROches and Hotel and Club Domaine de Cavaliere (5 stars) should cause a reassessment of the 4 star Les Roches.
