Forced from the motorway on our way down South by horizontal rain, we stopped here. The town looks pleasant enough, will have a look tommorow if it has not been washed away.
I had great hopes of this hotel. It was open, it had a triple room, it had a mad wooden spiral staircase and gloomy 1950's decor in the lobby. The owner was straightforward, not remotely gushing, and had obviously ushered people through the doors for many decades.
We climbed the creaky stairs, which slant in an engaging manner, and reached the second floor. I was then disappointed. I had envisaged 50's to 70's decor to match the downstairs. Old white bath, wooden floors, intriguing wallpaper. Nope. Lino, uninteresting furniture, ugly lighting and very bad. . .stale cigarette odour.
So, unfortunately it scores little, either for people who are seeking super mod cons and up-to-dateness, or for people like me, hoping for strange and ancient charm.
HOWEVER. We did enjoy the restaurant, also set in aspic, like the lobby and the owner. One of those old town establishments that never changes, just a few nods to modernity added. Wifi, er, can't think of anything else. We had a good basic menu at 11.30 euros, and there were fancier ones at 18.00 and beyond. Home made soup, steak and chips, choice of puds. . .Good, polite, swift service by the owner/ receptionist doubling as waiter/ maitre d'hotel.
Garage for 6.00 euros seemed O.K rather than risking our overloaded car on the street.
It seems to be the only hotel in the town apart from the plastic ones on the outskirts, so if you want to be in the centre rather than stuck in the wastelands of 'zone commerical' it's not a bad option.
