“This was an extremely depressing hotel with nothing to commend it.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2008

This was depressing - a down-at-heal hotel in a town that has been pummelled into nothing and feels like it. The rooms are functional and I can't believe reviews that are positive in any respect. It was so bad we bailed out of our room after 2 hours and went to Albert, 20 minutes down the road, and stayed at another Best Western, the Royal Picardie, which we would strongly recommend. We did this even though we had prepaid and non-refundable. Don't go there!

“Very depressing motel style”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2008

Stayed here for 2 nights doing a "self-guided" tour of the Somme area. probably the best of what is available in a fairly poor area I would say. Although clean, the rooms were very basic with stained carpet and a musty smell. Bathroom had poor lighting, no shower curtain and a hairdryer that didn't work properly. Found the staff to be pleasant enough, but the food in the restaurant (breakfast and dinner) was pretty bad.

“Nothing BEST about this Best Western”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2008

We stayed here in early September with a group of friends and even at check in noticed the lack of charm or welcome from the receptionist. She was completely disinterested even to the point a little later when two of the group were stuck in the lift. We thought she had ignored the alarm and only when it was pointed she obviously did not know what to do because she walked over to the lift to write down the telephone number to call the lift company. Fortunately the Sapeurs arrived to give assistance. I wonder what she would have done in a real emergency?
The rooms at the front are double glazed but you will be probably be disturbed, as we were, by noise from the bar along the road and in the morning a market on Saturday setting up with the added bonus of a mechanical street cleaner going up and down a half a dozen times on the Sunday morning in the early hours. The bathroom was badly lit with a heater that did not work or was disconnected and a hairdryer that kept cutting out to the point where it would not work any longer. The bottle of shower gel that was attached to the wall of the bath/shower was empty and we had to run down to reception to get a replacement. The telephone system was all to pot and mistimed with us being woken at 6.15 instead of 6.45 even though the recorded message said it was the latter! Breakfast is dubious with bread that only could be described as being left over from the previous day IE it was stale. Boiled eggs were only just warm and we saw guests cracking into what they thought was cooked only to get raw egg over themselves. And then the hot water which was warm and not hot enough for those who wanted a cup of tea, all very depressing.
The bar is managed by just one man who doubles up as the waiter in the restaurant, so getting a drink can be frustratingly slow and no drinks at the bar from 2300or even earlier. The restaurant meal was disappointing despite them calling it gastronomic. One to avoid I think unless the management or Best Western get their act together.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2008

Our experience of this hotel was very disappointing. The double room had the minimum-size double bed, was really only sufficient for one person, and in fact was only equipped for one - only one set of towels in the bathroom. We had to ask for a second set, and this seemed to prove very difficult, although a second set was eventually found - apparently by 'borrowing' from another room. The room was small and stuffy, and the window was fixed so it only opened a fraction at the top.
Although recently refurbished, the money has been spent in wrong ways - expensive reception desk (as featured on the brochure cover!) and bed headboards, whilst omitting essentials such as a shelf to keep things on in the bathroom, and a shower curtain.
Fortunately we had booked by phone with Best Western, so the rate applied was much less (€69) than the listed rate (€105 - which would have been a rip-off).

  • Liked — Location in the town.
  • Disliked — Small stuffy room.

“horrid location but fair hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2008

Peronne is a horrid down at heel town with a world class exhibtion/museum of WW1. Odd combination. This is real non tourist France. The hotel is basic-very basic. Our room was clean but depressingly bare with no pictures or colour on the walls. The carpet and bed spread were a yellow/brown colour which were showing age. The shower above the bath had no curtain and hence after we had used it the bathroom was soaking. The staff however were nice with limited english but very helpful in terms of where and what to visit in this historically rich region.
Wouldnt visit this town again- indeed I would speed up when driving on the motorway. Value wise not to bad but find it difficult to muster up much excitement. Funnily the town is twinned with Blackburn- would you stay there unless you had to? I close my case.

  • Liked — location near historical sites and museum
  • Disliked — Peronne itself- Awful
