“Grim, bordering on the unsafe”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2009

After much difficulty we eventually found it, right on the edge of town on an industrial estate. Staff were friendly, but that's about all that we could complement.

The rooms are motel-style in a separate block, with external 'balcony corridors'. We were on the ground floor - our first impression on entering was that it was crawling with flies and other wildlife. We seriously considered cutting our losses and leaving then and there, but instead ventured out to the hypermarket to buy insecticide...

The room was allegedly supposed to be a triple, but the third bed was not prepared, and there was not really sufficient space to put it up, had we needed to. The air conditioning unit was badly located in an alcove so had little effect throughout the room, but the thermostat was on the wall just above one of the beds and clicked loudly all night.

The bathroom was shabby, not particularly clean and smelled fusty. We didn't spend a second longer in there than we needed to.

The shutters were noisy to operate, and we were disturbed by several other people closing their shutters. We could also hear every footstep taken by the people in the room above ours.

The restaurant was OK but nothing great. We decided to avoid the buffet, given the number of flies that we saw crawling around it.

The biggest concern, however, had to be the loose manhole cover at the edge of the path between the buildings - partially stepping on it caused it to move and open up the drain hole below - an accident waiting to happen.

In summary: fly-ridden, noisy, in a poor state of repair, and not the cleanest, but, on the plus side, an excellent view of the local JCB distributor...

“Don't even think about booking this hotel”

We booked 2 nights at the Peronne Campanile, having previously stayed at the Campanile in St Dizier which was excellent and great value for money. The Peronne Campanile (Room 8) was 20 euros per night more expensive, but was dirty, with peeling paint, disgusting cracked toilet seat, a shower that did not drain, dangerous heaters which had burned the wall and an overwhelming smell of stale cigarettes even in the 'clean' towels.
The point of these international chain hotels are that you should know what you are getting - with minor variations. The contrast between these 2 Campaniles was huge - with this appalling one costing 64 euros per night and the very nice one costing only 44!
We are pursuing a refund.

“Standard Campanile”

Perfectly adequate, in an area where there aren't many options.

“Beware!”

Unfortunately I've never seen the hotel from inside, although I paid for the room. I've booked a room on the hotel website. Due to our delayed flight, we arrived quite late, around 2 a.m. As the hotel website showed a symbol "open 24 hours", I didn't expect a problem. But there was one. Upon arrival, the reception was closed. There was only a key distribution maschine, which neither accepted my credit card nor the booking number. So we had to leave to find another hotel (the first available that night was 2 hours later in clichy).

On my next credit card statement, the hotel charged me for the booked night. I complained about that by e-mail, and the manager answered that the reception closes at 11 and the machine only accepts french credit cards, so I should have called before. He doesn't know the content of his website, and he wasn't able or willing to name any other responsible person in the campanile head office.

So - never again Campanile Peronne, and never again any other Campanile hotel.
