I really have quite a rant, so I am going to put it in point form as I am writing from the hotel itself and the internet is atrocious and drops out every five minutes so you have to log in and I lost everything I wrote before.
Hotel:
- At first we thought “Lovely!” The room is nice enough and in the foot of the actual Abbey away from the main hotel so we were happy to be in this unique room
- But then we saw we had a 8.30am check out. Considering it’s a 1pm check in that seems a bit steep, particularly since we arrived at 10.30am and were told the room wouldn’t be ready until the exact time of 1pm. All other hotels in Europe have been at least 11am check out, if not 12pm.
- The television didn’t work. When we asked we were told “It is a city problem and the police are writing a letter to explain the situation.” Whilst I find it hard to believe the police are involved, the least they could have done is tell us at check in.
- No milk for tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided in the room, nor potable water for the kettle.
Dinner (four course 38 euro set menu) included in room rate:
- WORST MEAL IN EUROPE!!
- They only had one English menu for a room full of English speaking people obviously suckered into eating their meal with the hotel package as well and it wasn’t even in line with the French menu with half the items whited out. We were told, “Not updated” when we wanted to confirm availability. Too bad if you can’t remember your high school French was the motto of the story.
- Bread good, wine nice, chips (fries) we paid extra for were tasty, dinner inedible
- Entrees/starters were quite nice, oysters not shucked properly though so a lot was wasted
- The steak my fiancé had was all fat, undercooked, and not worth the 16 euro ala carte menu price
- My lamb was charcoal flavoured due to the herbs on top that had somehow caught fire and was served as is
- The potato gratin was hard and gross, tasting more like a poorly cooked eggy frittata rather than a creamy gratin so we ordered the chips which were the highlight of the meal
- The side of beans, again extra, were overcooked and lank and make my boarding school food look good
- The cheese course was a tragedy against France. The “Normandy Cheese Platter” could have been better procured from Woolworths in Australia as it was old, dry and served with nothing but stale French stick, and the “Camembert Fondue” was merely a vol au vent that had been cooked in 1989 and reheated.
- We had hoped for redemption with the desert but it was not to be. My “Tart du Normandie” was a apple tartlet number that an airline could have provided better and the chocolate profiteroles were hard, tasteless frozen rocks covered in burnt tasting chocolate sauce
- Valued at almost 180 euro (including the extra chips, beans etc) it was the worst spend money in Europe
We had a nanny nap so can attest to the comfort of the beds and are happy the room is cool and not an inferno as with previous European rooms.
So, the moral of
