“No consideration for customers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I have booked one night in this hotel for February 23, 2012. On February 6 I sent an email to them informing that I was cancelling my reservation because of health problems and - even knowing their policy of charging 50% of the room rate in case of cancellation between 3 and 30 days before the arrival - I asked them to consider not charging me as I was cancelling not because of my will but against it and due to medical recommendation. They sent me a short email message just saying "We will apply the cancellation policy." I can't believe that a hotel that treat their customers like this can offer a good service to their guests. “DO NOT EAT HERE! Potentially a great stay, but so poorly done”

I really have quite a rant, so I am going to put it in point form as I am writing from the hotel itself and the internet is atrocious and drops out every five minutes so you have to log in and I lost everything I wrote before.
Hotel:
- At first we thought “Lovely!” The room is nice enough and in the foot of the actual Abbey away from the main hotel so we were happy to be in this unique room
- But then we saw we had a 8.30am check out. Considering it’s a 1pm check in that seems a bit steep, particularly since we arrived at 10.30am and were told the room wouldn’t be ready until the exact time of 1pm. All other hotels in Europe have been at least 11am check out, if not 12pm.
- The television didn’t work. When we asked we were told “It is a city problem and the police are writing a letter to explain the situation.” Whilst I find it hard to believe the police are involved, the least they could have done is tell us at check in.
- No milk for tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided in the room, nor potable water for the kettle.
Dinner (four course 38 euro set menu) included in room rate:
- WORST MEAL IN EUROPE!!
- They only had one English menu for a room full of English speaking people obviously suckered into eating their meal with the hotel package as well and it wasn’t even in line with the French menu with half the items whited out. We were told, “Not updated” when we wanted to confirm availability. Too bad if you can’t remember your high school French was the motto of the story.
- Bread good, wine nice, chips (fries) we paid extra for were tasty, dinner inedible
- Entrees/starters were quite nice, oysters not shucked properly though so a lot was wasted
- The steak my fiancé had was all fat, undercooked, and not worth the 16 euro ala carte menu price
- My lamb was charcoal flavoured due to the herbs on top that had somehow caught fire and was served as is
- The potato gratin was hard and gross, tasting more like a poorly cooked eggy frittata rather than a creamy gratin so we ordered the chips which were the highlight of the meal
- The side of beans, again extra, were overcooked and lank and make my boarding school food look good
- The cheese course was a tragedy against France. The “Normandy Cheese Platter” could have been better procured from Woolworths in Australia as it was old, dry and served with nothing but stale French stick, and the “Camembert Fondue” was merely a vol au vent that had been cooked in 1989 and reheated.
- We had hoped for redemption with the desert but it was not to be. My “Tart du Normandie” was a apple tartlet number that an airline could have provided better and the chocolate profiteroles were hard, tasteless frozen rocks covered in burnt tasting chocolate sauce
- Valued at almost 180 euro (including the extra chips, beans etc) it was the worst spend money in Europe
We had a nanny nap so can attest to the comfort of the beds and are happy the room is cool and not an inferno as with previous European rooms.
So, the moral of

“Overpriced but nice”

We stayed at the Auberge Saint-Pierre based on recommendations on Trip Advisor that said that staying at the Mont and experiencing it at night after the tour buses have left was an unmissable experience. While that maybe true in the middle of the summer tourist season, we visited in mid-winter and while there were certainly other people around, the Mont definitely wasn't crowded and during our tour of the abbey, we even had some of the rooms completely to ourselves. As a result, we ddn't really feel that an overnight stay at the Mont added anything to our visit and if we had our chance again, we probably would not stay. We also didn't realise that while the incoming tide can flood some of the lower lying visitor car parks, the road leading to theMont is never cut off so it is possible to visit the Mont in the quieter evening period even if you are not staying there, provided that you are happy to walk the kilometer or so from the mainland.

The hotel room was fine, but not worth the 190 euros charged. We stayed in the building opposite the cemetery, which is maybe a 50m walk from hotel reception. I suspect that the room has recently been refurbished as it was very clean and the furnishings were new. It was quite a sizable room compared to other European hotel rooms, but the bed was made up of 2 very narrow single beds pushed together rather than a double or queen bed, which were very uncomfortable to sleep on as they kept drifting apart during the night, giving us the constant feeling that we were falling out of bed. Anyone intending to stay in this hotel should also note that you have to climb several flights of stairs to reach your room (but then again, you have to climb stairs to reach pretty much everything on the Mont) and that if your room is on the ground floor, there will be noise every time someone walks past your window. Personally, I would skip this hotel, visit the Mont first thing in the morning during one of the winter months and stay elsewhere.

“well, we are moved to Les Logis du Chapeau Blanc”

If you are travelling to Mont saint Michel, you definitely stay over night. The Mont is beautiful at night and even more beautiful by dawn. You got to see the mont before tourist coming in and walk through the small lanes before everybody does.
I booked the hotel about 1.5 month ago and just a week before my arrival to the hotel, I was told the main building will be closed for works. We were moved to another building which requires some walks and a few steps. It is not in the main street so you will have to walk to have dinner. at the night, there is no light so it is a bit scary.
Our room is ok and is actually for 4 people. (we are only 2) the room is huge and is quiet. Though it was just next to the tombs at the backyard of the church, I did have some good sleep.

“One of the nicest places we have ever stayed.”

In a perfect place with a perfect staff especially the front desk people. We did a more or less last minute trip. They were helpful in getting to the Mont and in taking advantage of the package deal.

Room Tip: any room is super.
