“The hotel is the price you pay for staying on Mont Saint Michel and dodging the day crowd.”

This is not for anyone with problems climbing stairs or needing a lot of luxury. It has a lot of history and is reminiscent of the way basic French hotels operated 40 years ago. Pack a very light overnight bag as you will have to carry it a long way and up flights of stairs. The reviews are accurate but the evening and early morning on Mont Saint Michel are more than worth the lack of comfort. If you like living the past and aren't as attached to modern convenience then you will enjoy the experience. The Internet connection on my iPad was excellent and the room wasn't as much dirty as small and dark. The menu is very expensive for what you get . There are better alternatives near by. But it is all about the omelette which has been very famous for more than a century and has drawn countless celebrities since the 19th century. They use a secret recipe and method that results in a very ligh foamy omelette that is eaten plain so as not to make it overly heavy.

Visiting Mont-St-Michel early in the morning is admittedly quite magical, but our experience at the La Mere Poulard was less than pleasant. While we expected the property to be old and quirky, what we didn't anticipate was rudeness from the staff and filthy conditions. The carpeting in the hallways was utterly horrifying as was the large stain in the center of our room. Don't make the same mistake we did by giving the hotel a try. Trust the other reviewers and don't stay at La Mere Poulard.

“Mucho Steps, Bait-And-Switch & Outrageous Prices”

OVERALL - We stayed one night at the Mere Poulard. The hotel is the closest one to the island's entrance, and our room was very nice. It was large by US standards (especially so by French standards), was nicely furnished, had a small fridge and had 2 large windows onto the Grande Rue. The staff was friendly and spoke good English. BUT, the hotel lacks an elevator and our understanding was they had no porter to transport our bags to/from our room! And, the steps to the rooms are a killer - our room was on the lowest level having guest rooms but we had to lug suitcasses up/down about 65 very narrow, sometimes circular steps (which in some places have no handrails) to get to/from our room.

HOTEL PRICES - On average ths price of a room at the Mere Poulard is 25 - 50% more than the other hotels on the island. However, when we made our reservations (about three months before our planed stay in late September) all other hotels were fully booked!

FOOD PRICES and THE BAIT-AND-SWITCH - We chose to eat at the Mere Poulard and chose the lobster omelet dinner for 25 Euros each. Our waiter then informed us that they don't even make the omelet we'd just chosen from their menu and that the only lobster omelet they offer has 3 times the amout of lobster and costs 3 times as much - thats 75 Euros each which (at the then current exchange rate) totaled about $210 USD for two people not including drinks, etc. We immediately got up and left the restaurant!!

We then looked at the other restaurants along the Grande Rue, examined the posted menus of the ones that looked good to us, and concluded that the Mere Poulard offers much less of a selection and is at least 50% more expensive than the others! We had great service and food elsewhere on MSM for about $80 total for the 2 of us!

“No room at the Inn”

My husband and I recently travelled to France, where the entire trip was lovely except the experience at La Mere Poulard. We had booked a room throught Expedia in April and had received a confirmation from Expedia 4 days prior to arrival. We only decided to visit this location because we were able to stay right there and enjoy all night and morning. We were 4 hours from this location and would have skipped the entire experience if we had known that upon arrival (and we were there by noon) we were told that they had a computer mixup 2 days before and we didn't have reservations. We were told that they made reservations for us off the island. We said no thanks and were terribly disappointed in the entire experience. They showed no remorse and were rather flippant about the outcome. We had, of course, prepaid through Expedia and they just said we'd have to get a hold of Expedia for a refund. All the other accommodations we had throughout France were entirely different and a joy to experience. Would definitely give this place a thumbs down.

Very good location if you want to stay overnight, there are less tourist early in the morning and late in The afternoon.
The dinner was very good but the rooms are shocking, we where straight above 24/7 refrigeration compressors, it appears that the hotel is living on it's past glory
To make it worse the next day my wife left her black coat behind( which she did not see because the room was so dark) and when we called the staff was not very helpful and said nothing was handed in, what I,m sure was true because somebody is now walking around France in a very nice black coat with a gold brouch
I would strongly recommend not to stay there.

Room Tip: If you go there against my advise , insist on a east facing room, what might be difficult because al...
