“Faded glory but fun”

I stayed here for a couple of nights on arrival and before departure on the Portsmouth-Caen ferry.

It's a real old Grand Hotel which beautiful staircases and rooms which are a bit let down by the current Mercure branding. In fairness, it's probably in the price range that people passing by will pay though it would make a magnificent Sofitel if there was a market for it.

The access to the promenade is great for a brisk walk, the rooms are clean and functional and the breakfast was pretty good. Waking up to look out across the sea was a pleasure.

Cabourg has a few excellent restaurants which are reasonably priced and a few other interesting shops too. Worth a stop before heading deeper south.

Room Tip: Choose a room over looking the sea, it's worth the extra cost.

“Fully lives up to its reputation”

We had the chance of a last minute booking with a really interesting price for the room+breakfast.
Room on the garden - very nice view although of course you probably can't beat the view on the sea.
A very spacious room, incredibly comfortable bed and bed sheets, state of the art material in the bathroom - the shower was fantastic.
The atmosphere in the hotel is very calm and peaceful. We went there to take a rest and objective fully attained !
Right on the beach, can't get any better.
We really loved it and will be going again, with the kids next time.

The only thing we felt did not live up to the reputation was the restaurant : tasty but not incredible. Dessert big disappointment. The wine was good and the service perfect.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, don't hesitate to invest in a room with a view. If you're hesitating...

“Beautiful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We had a great time at the Grand Hotel de Cabourg. Perfect location, nice little city.
The hotel is like a small renovated palace, great bar, service is excellent, good restaurant.
Only negative aspect : no parking places reserved for the Hotel.

Room Tip: The family room is great.

“Paradise - but not perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Who wouldn't like to see a place where Marcel Proust wrote his famous book "A la recherche du temps perdu"? A wonderful place for a stay and not as old-fashioned as I thought. The atmosphere is still there and the location wonderful, the outlook to the beach of Cabourg and even the garden side.
One might think that a traditional hotel like that is not not run by young female trainees at the bar and the reception, where they told me - sorry, sorry - that room 414 where M. Proust lived cannot be seen because of guest reservation. Great disappointment. Why didn't they call the room service to find out that this guest already checked out or did not arrive yet? That's what I found out myself when I asked the very friendly room service to let me have a look.
We did not take breakfast but found it on our account. It never happens the other way round.

“End of a holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

Perfect for the proximity to the channel ferry port of Ouistreham, when one has to catch the early boat. Also very pleasant to amble along the promenade after a busy site seeing holiday, reminiscent of a bygone era. Restaurant in the hotel very reasonable, with a varied menu. The wine list could improve.
