On arriving at the hotel we were met by a pleasant, clean and modern looking chalet style building. The male receptionist was very welcoming and very pleasant. We were sent back outside and round the corner to a set of motel buildings (two storey) which were at the back of a very noisy junior school playground.
Opening the door we were taken aback at the dingy appearance. A sticky, dirty, cigarette burned wooden floor, a double bed which took up more than half the room, a strange bathroom with a child size bath, thin cheap towels , a broken lamp fitting above the bed, a hanging space with three plastic hangers, and the third bed was a roll away two inches away from the dirty floor.
It was so bad we left the room and checked in to the All Seasons hotel in Roubaix at an additional cost of £300.
We appreciate the Campanile chain is on the low end of the hotel market, however, we had paid £155.00 for two nights room only. I would not have paid £55.00 for the room it was so awful.
The area of Roubaix is not the best impression of France or Lille for that matter. Nowhere seemed to be open in the evening, and to be honest it felt unsafe to be walking around there. We will definitely not be returning to either any Campanile hotel, or the Roubaix area. We had another Campanile hotel booked for Dijon, which I cancelled immediately.
Do not be fooled either by my photographs, the room looks decidedly better when lit by flash.
There's cheap and there's cheap, and this is both cheap and unpleasant- certainly not suitable for families.
