Booked hotel as part of a Times readers special offer without looking at reviews. Feared the worse before travelling but these were completely unfounded. Yes, not too easy to find with instructions provided but this is where a good satnav system comes in use. Unfortunately, half the streets in Cambrai were being dug up on the day of our arrival so many detours necessary. As for the "council estate", this was to my understanding apartments for university students, no problems there. We upgraded to a Chateau room for £10 per night, well worth the extra. The room itself was fine, nothing grand but comfortable. Yes, there was a little noise creeping up 2 flights of stairs from the reception area, but you need extra special hearing if this is to disturbe you in your room. Word of warning, the lift is only to the first floor, there are 30 stair treadsto the second. Take a light case! The restaurant provides good and reasonably priced (by French standards) food with a good choice, (take a dictionary if your French isn't too good as the waiter's English isn't too explicit). Be careful of the wine, very expensive for anything semi decent, but don't go for the cheapest as this isn't at all good (26 Euros). Continental breakfast only but adequate (very good coffee and a choice of 3 different teas),cost 10 Euros perhaps a little expensive for what there was, but service was good, nice to see staff smile first thing in the morning. Setting in a park, good for an early morning constituition. Walking in the park and by the canal feels like being in the country, you would not realise the grounds are surrounded by blocks of flats. You will need a car as the hotel is 2 kms from the town centre, and there are no nearby bars or restaurants. All in all a good experience if you don't want to spend time in the modern bland international style hotels. Staff are friendly andhelpful, full of the joys of life. Maybe we were lucky with our stay, but give it a try.
