Another great stay at the ibis Arras. You couldn't get a better location and although the hotel is getting a little dated (hence the 4/5 rating for Rooms), all the facilities you'd want and expect at an ibis are there and we couldn't fault the cleanliness. All the staff we came into contact with were very friendly and on check-in, the guy behind the desk didn't change to English until we'd conversed for a while then he moved to English and said he wanted to give us chance to practice our French which was a great idea ... and we managed quite well and certainly gave me the confidence to have a stab at asking for other things (like asking to make a booking for breakfast) in French throughout our stay as I knew he was going to be patient and wouldn't make us feel stupid :)
Breakfast was quite basic but really enjoyable. Mainly consisted of cereal, bread, cold meats and cheese, yogurts, pastries, pancakes and cakes with fruit juices and a selection of coffee and tea. All self-service. Other hotel's we've stayed in have had a small amout of hot food (scrambled eggs, small sausages, etc...) which would have been nice for the cold mornings but if I'm honest, we didn't really miss them. I've rated Value 4/5 as I felt the price of breakfast was a little steep based on what was on offer but to be fair, what we did have was fresh, well presented and there was plenty of it and kept us going until the evening. Drinks were also price (I think it was 6.20E for a large Kronenburg, 3.50E for a small and around 2.60E for a cuppa, roughly).
The location couldn't be any better - right between the 2 main squares and in easy reach of the train station (if you needed it, sbout 5-10mins walk max) and an underground secure public car park under one of the squares. Parking is 10.50Euro for 24hrs - still after 2 stays we've not quite worked it out as we were told both times by the hotel that if we exited the carpark with one of their 24hr tickets at, say, 11am then it would be valid until 11am the following day - this never happened and the tickets were always invalid so best to find out more about that. When you leave the hotel each day, you just hand them the carpark ticket you took from the barrier on entry and they'll change it for a 24hr one and charge to your room.
Free wireless internet is available and also a free to use computer in the bar area.
Thinking about a 3rd trip to the area in spring 2012 and will definately be booking the ibis Arras again.
