Having just finished a week cruise on the Canal du Midi, four of us traveling without advance reservations relied on Tourist Offices for recommendations on lodging. Our first night off the boat landed us in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon and just before the tourist office closed. We indicated our price range to the lady behind the counter and she fixed us up with a one-night stay at Hotel de L’atelier a few blocks away. Luck was with us and we found a parking space in sight of the hotel (note, street parking only). The age of the buildings making up the hotel shows in the unique stairways and charmingly irregular architecture.
Our friends were given a bright, cheery room on an upper floor overlooking the interior courtyard. My husband and I had a large, high ceilinged room on the first floor (US second floor) overlooking the street. I was a bit concerned about noise at night (we like our windows open), but this section of town was remarkably quiet after 10:00pm and both of us had a wonderful, relaxing sleep. I appreciated the large bathroom and excellent shower – something I took for granted until experiencing for the rest of our trip the seemingly common standard of a tub with only a hand-held shower head in older accommodations. We ate breakfast outdoors in the courtyard and took advantage of the good selections of breads, croissants, jams/jellies/honey, cheese and meats.
The owner was fluent in English and shared the history and obvious pride she had in the hotel. We would have stayed an additional night but alas, the hotel was fully booked. The owner found us other accommodation which also turned out to be a delight (see review for Pontmartin).
The hotel is perfectly located for exploring Villeneuve-lez-Avignon on foot, though it is about a mile and a half walk to the walled city of Avignon. The only reason for my rating of four rather than five stars relates to lack of private parking, but we didn’t mind parking on the street as we weren’t leaving anything in our rental car.
Room Tip: My perference was for the upper floor overlooking the interior courtyard. I'm a morning person...
