“Fairytale Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

What a fantastic place to stay... Sandrine was most welcoming and helpful and the dining experience provided by her husband Jean-Paul Lecroq was fine dining at its best.We were lucky enough to have a bathroom in one of the turrets with a view if the sky and up the Gorge du Tarn from the window.I am hoping my husband will take me back to the Chateau for my 50th birthday with some of our closest friends....it doesnt get much better than that. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

“Nice option if you don't need to be connected. Check your bill for errors!”

The Chateau is old with worn stairs leading to the rooms. It is clean and reasonably well updated. If you like modern decor, look elsewhere. We stayed in the least expensive, small but comfortable room (overlooking the parking lot) in the Chateau for 118 euros for 2 nights (via booking.com). We ate 2 dinners and 1 breakfast in the hotel dining room. You do not see your restaurant bill until you check out of your room. Upon checking out, I noticed 2 erroneous charges on our bill (we were charged double the price of wine we had with dinner AND we were charged for 2 breakfasts on a day that we did not order or eat breakfast). The total amount we were overcharged was 70 euros. I had time to carefully study the bill as I waited for the clerk to take 2 phone calls interrupting my check-out. When I explained the errors (in decent French), he politely corrected the bill, only after verifying the correct price of the wine with a coworker. However, he did not apologize. This situation is indicative of the service of the hotel staff. They are rather informal, hesitate to recognize any faults of their own, but can be reasonably competent at times. Interestingly, some of them work as both front desk clerks, bellstaff and restaurant staff. They hang outside the building smoking in front of the main and rear entrances, when they find some time. The WI-FI does not work well at all in the rooms. We travel with a special gadget to pull in wifi signals from great distances, in the event of a weak signal. Our laptops and smartphones did not work without the gadget. When the hotel wifi does work, it has a goofy system(that requires that you agree to allow monitoring of your personal data etc). That system (LozereWireless) logs you out every 5 minutes, and you are forced to repeat the onerous login procedure. When I mentioned the weak wifi signal to the hotel clerk, he treated me as if I were inept and technologically-challenged (which I am not). Of course the strongest wifi signal is right at the front desk area, where you wouldn't want to skype home, or work. The food in the hotel restaurant was good (but not extraordinary). We were disappointed that the pricey menu was exactly the same for both nights. It would have been nice to have some variation. When asked, they only offered 1 quasi-vegetarian option (a 15 euros salad with or without crab), although there were a lot of amuses bouches and other freebies. Breakfast was basic continental (for 15 euros per person) with an excellent basket of bread/croissants/jams. However the coffee should have been better. They offered it as an option to be served in the room. We laughed, as our room was so small there was no room ANYWHERE to eat a breakfast, other than in the bed.
The hotel sent several emails in advance of arrival (one of them marked "urgent") asking us to reserve/confirm dinner the night of our arrival. I understand that they give preference to hotel guests for reservations/seating, but it seemed a little pushy. Furthermore, I was aware of the need to reserve a dinner at the hotel from their initial email confirming our booking.com hotel reservation that mentioned the necessity for a dinner reservation.

Room Tip: Pay more for a bigger room if you want one. But the less expensive ones are good enough.

“Beauty everywhere you look”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

The approach, although a little scary because of curving narrow roads, is through a beautiful gorge filled with breath-taking views of trees and little villages, a river, and sheer walls of grays and reds and creams, And then you see the castle, which is situated perfectly. The rooms are very nice, service friendly, and a great old dog plops in the hallway awaiting a belly rub. Dinner was very good, as was breakfast. The pool was too cold to use, but it was nice to relax by it. (It would have been nice to have nicer furniture instead of cheap plastic chaises, but they were sufficient.) We loved the suite but would have appreciated a larger bed (although we realize that wouldn't have been historially accurate.) Be sure to visit St.Enimie and the other little village nearby. If you are a biker or kayaker, you will really love this place!

Room Tip: Stay in the original chateau if you want charm or in the newer building if you want a little more mo...

“Beautiful approach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

This is a beautiful chateau. The approach is a challenging drive, but the approach is beautiful. There is an entrance gate, but it is no problem to deal with. Check-in was quite simple. We booked two rooms for the four of us; two adults and two boys 12 and 14. We had Loyse for the boys with two twin beds. The adults had Bertand, which had a balcony. Well worth the extra 10 euros a night. We loved our room, although it was a little hot. There was a fan, so there really was no problem.

The grounds of this chateau were amazing. Lots of room to walk next to the water. The three “boys” skipped stones every day, even in the rain. I enjoyed watching the kayakers and just turning each bend. I don’t think I would ever grow tired of those walks – the snails, slugs, odd bugs. Perfect for my boys. I just made sure I didn’t step on any of the creatures.

This “chateau” was definitely more of a hotel. There was no mingling between the guests. The restaurant was a restaurant and not a communal dining room. Fine if that is what you are expecting. There is a formal feel to the place, but also elegance.

The only disappointment was the meals. Breakfast was mis-served. There were four of us, yet only two fruits and yogurts. The staff seemed very confused that two rooms sat together for breakfast. Aperitifs were very fun on the terrace, but the meal was limited in choice. I had the zucchini salad. I didn’t know how many different shapes a zucchini could be shaped in. Unfortunately, it still had the taste of raw zucchini.

The only other issue encountered on this trip was with wi-fi. It had to be individually setup using your home email address. It took nearly 15 minutes for this to be setup. For an isolated place like this, it did seem over-kill.

The towns nearby were fine. The views of the Tarn unbelievable, but I think two or three nights max in this chateau unless the weather is stunning, which it was not while we were there. This was our first time near the Tarn, but it will not be the last. It is an unexpectedly beautiful area of France.

“Absolutely stunning”

This is the real deal - a medieval castle in the most impressive setting nestled by the River Tarn in a deep gorge with cliffs hundreds of feet high and eagles soaring gliding over head.

The rooms are full of chararacter and beautifully appointed with period furniture. Our room looked along the gorge across the gardens to the pool.

The service was impeccable and the food just wonderful.

The drive itself along the gorge is stunning - an ideal approach to one of the great hotels.
